Expedition roof rack for roof tent |
|
I recall someone posting a question about availability.
Visiting a local Land Rover specialist here in Switzerland I found that the owner has designed and fitted one to his Discovery 3.
I have posted one phone in my Gallery, if anyone is interested I can post some more detailed photos of the fixing finish etc.
Best part was I had the oportunity to take it for a run. Can one of you explain the technique to do a hill start and need to 'feed off' the hand break? Discovery 3 XS Auto, Stornaway, Active rear diff.

The way to hill start is to let out the clutch and when you feel the car starting to pull... release the park brake and press the go pedal.
Don't use the traditional and incorrect slipping the clutch method.

Pelyma,
Does that mean automatics don't have a handbrake?
Mine will be manual! Discovery 3 XS Auto, Stornaway, Active rear diff.

Automatic do have an handbrake but...
For an hill start and unless the slope is really extrem, the car cannot go backward down the slope... The gearbox, once in D, prevents it...
The solution is :
- Start the engine,
- Release the handbrake,
- Move to D,
- Release the brake...
- Press GO !

If you use the electronic handbrake it automatically releases as you go forward, this is why you cannot use electronic handbrakes to pass your driving test in the UK - they're too easy. You can also release it by putting your foot on the brake and pushing the handbrake button down.
Go on the £1500 for the auto box is a bargain, it is absolutely brilliant particularly if you tow. DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Thanks for the photo. Yes, I would be interested in more detailed views of how the rack is attached, especially the forward attachment points.

Martin4x4,
Those are great photos for showing the attachment of the rack. Everything seems quite well made and solid, although the overall appearance is rather utilitarian, as is fitting for the purpose. Thanks for posting!

Hello outrageous,
where did you get that name?
I am the person who designed and manufactured the rack which Martin pinned in the forum. Yes It is very basic, took a lot of measuring and time to get right, because of the height/width problems, makes no nasty noises and has attracted a lot of attention from Discovery 3 owners. I do not think that there is very much on the market, haven't bothered looking.
You said that our rack appears to be utilitarian, which is what we wanted. We had to go for a lightweight construction with flat bed and no unnecessary "cream on the cake", simply because the maximum manufacturer's weight on a Disco 3 is only 75 Kilos. A average roof tent weighs about 40/45 Kilos, our rack another 24 kilos, and it is mor or less full.
We do have detatchable sides if required.

Chris,
I am very impressed with your abilities in creating this rack. It really seems quite versatile as well as significantly stronger than the factory expedition rack. I imagine you could sell a fair number if you were so inclined, perhaps to some of the guys on this forum, although shipping such a large item might be problematic. By the way, my screen name originated as an anagram (letter rearrangement) of Touareg (=outrage) on a different forum.

Detachable NATO hitch for disco 3 |

Hello, I'm new to this site and saw a picture of your Disco 3 with a detachable NATO hitch. I am looking to buy a sankey and will be grateful if you could let me know where I can get one.
Many Thanks

My adapter was made by site member RLD you can check out his gallery, and contact him via the forum.
Doing a quick search on 'NATO' it looks like there are other alternatives out there. I do have a NATO hitch sitting in my garage if you get stuck for one of these. Discovery 3 XS Auto, Stornaway, Active rear diff.
