In the process of doing mine with ali checker plate, moving the last
three slats back, so that the rear slat is nearly under the the rear
top cross bar. As the most foot traffic would be from the rear to about
just past the half way mark on the rack, I left the front two in place.
But I left the slots open on the front and back slats so that I can
use the old brackets to re-mount my awnings, just need to get hold
of some 8mm rivnuts to add some extra lashing points, have some
8mm male threaded eye bolts for the job.

I know that Klaus put Alu on the complete Expedition Roof Rack including the rounded front. He has drawings too.

Any good? Not black anodised though.

Would the 2mm not do?

I imagine there would be a good weight saving dropping from 3mm or would the 2mm just not be strong enough for load/ wind?

Good point there Tanters.
The rack is strong enough, so I suppose the thinner the better.
Thumbs Up

Al, thanks for link, but it doesn't work for me.

tanters, i'm going with the 2mm ali checker plate and see no
reason to go thicker. It would be a different story if you
use plain 2mm ali flat sheet as the checker plate process
makes it a stronger sheet. I would not go smaller than
3mm on plain ali flat sheet.

Good job there Tony.

How did you get it black?

Did the sheet metal come like that, or did you have it sprayed/powdercoated?
