The starter is sealed and has two pipes. These are brought together and a single pipe run up behind the engine. A clip is added to the bell housing to help support it. This appears to be a mod from LR - presumably one of the things that allowed for the wading depth increase. I killed two starters on my TDV8 before I found out about the starter snorkel.

Judging by the way the LR dealership tucked the snorkel down below the gearbox rather than routing it correctly, it seems many don't know about it.

Thought I’d bring this old thread back to life!

Is the snorkel hose for the starter always in place, but just not connected? I’ve just ruined my starter in a flood and found no snorkel hoses attached to it, just wondering if they are there or if I need to buy some!

Thanks mate, it was actually that diagram which made me realise the hoses should be there.

They aren’t in place on my vehicle so for now I’ve used two lengths of fuel hose as I’ve just replaced my starter motor. LR want £48 for the hoses Shocked

Are there any real issues wading (not that I plan on going anywhere as deep as the bonnet) with the standard breathers?

I’m considering getting a snorkel and running extended breathers up with the snorkel.

Is it a waste of time?

Would anyone happen to know if the D3 breathers are the same as the D4's?

I'm assuming they are.
