Extra value in DIY strip vs sell as non runner?
You may have already read my tale of woe in that my D3 now needs a new engine. I started asking about DIY strip vs sell as is at the bottom of that post but think it might get more answers if I start again with a new topic. I have searched but not finding much comparative advice to help me make a decision.
Value running was 4.5K to 5K, LR indie has suggested 1.5K for a Jag engine plus 2K to fit, so I'm cutting my losses.
There seem to be plenty of D3s on ebay that need engines and with listings breaking for parts, e.g. contact seller and we'll raise you a buy it now for that part.
I'm considering DIY stripping it but i'd be interested to know from someone who has done it the following:
1. What value for 2007 D3 GS as is? 130K miles, Black paint, Black leather, D4 rear lights, Body colour wheel arch trims, General AT3s all round with loads of wear left, Brakes including parking brake done all round about 6K miles ago.
2. How much extra hard cash they realised vs how many hours they spent on stripping and ebaying. Stripping the car i'll quite enjoy but I can see hours looking on ebay for guide prices and wrapping and shipping?
3. How much actually sells, does anyone want interiors, doors, or just transmission bits, engine ancillaries and bits of trim?
4. How long was it sat on your drive once you started?

If your willing to do a diy strip then why not do a diy engine fit?

Do you have the time & space to do it?
I’d say go for it but I might be biased.
I striped most of my D3 in about 8 hours before I crashed out and started the 4 day drive home. There were lots of bits I missed but the interior was pretty well picked clean. With a drive and place to store the stuff you could get down to all bar the shell and heavy bits like engine & gearbox etc. Most of the internal parts sold, you’d be amazed at what peeps are after, with just a few odd bits still in my junk room. Resist the temptation to say “right folks, what do you want”, strip the car, research what parts are selling for (here & on eBay) then get a for sale thread going, “speaking” to Martin first of course.
Stripping is not difficult. I did it in just over 8 hours in freezing conditions and when sleep deprived after 4 days driving. Take your time and if the connector won’t disconnect just cut it off. Unless you’re selling parts of looms that is. It’s very therapeutic process. I thought it would be difficult emotionally but once I started I just took my time and stayed focused on one item after another. Once a few bits are out you know it’s not a car anymore but a collection of parts. For me that tipping point was when I pulled all the fuses and relays, then I knew the car was past the point of no return.
Label everything up as you go. One ECU thingie looks just like another after a while. Plus keep careful track of sales and whose paid for what, what’s sent, what’s received etc. Spreadsheet and SWMBO did all that for me. Re selling I had an obsolete bank account that I used for the incoming funds, hence no risk of main current accounts details getting out. Stay organised and all will be well.
Re cash realised, if you are comparing with the value of your car be careful that your estimate is not way over the top. Just coz cars are on sale for such a price, doesn’t mean that’s what they will get. Your car is not worth much as is, prob double or treble that as a pile of parts. Peeps here have sold their car with blown engine and £1,500 comes to mind.
There’s lots to think about, the advantage you have is time. You’re hopefully not in a rush, so think things through.
Don't forget to get an RFT refund, suspend insurance & declare SORN before the end of the month, if you haven't done so already.

Hi all. Thanks to everyone for the replies and especially Sea Raider for the detailed PM very much appreciated.
I'm going to get it towed back from the garage and make a final decision next week.
