Failed MOT

Well my D3 failed it's MOT today on two points Sad

1. Front discs excessively worn on the inside - They were extremely rusty and large chunks of rust were flaking off on the vented part of the disc.

2. Excessive exhaust emmisions for a Turbo charged vehicle.

Point 1 was covered under the MOT warranty but I had to pay a £50 excess. I was also charged £63.42 for a new set of pads as they were not covered - even though they had done less than 3000 miles.

Point 2 was cured by taking the car a short run up the bypass Surprised

One of the faults I reported was excessive black smoke, they couldn't find the fault but did carry out a tune download to the ECU - still getting the smoke though.

The D3 also had its 60k service done (only done 16700 miles though) but thankfully I didn't have to pay for that as I bought a service pack when I bought my D3 - one more service left.

Who changed your pads?

You would have thought they would be showing signs of wear just 3000 miles ago.

The pads were changed exactly a year ago (at the last service) and as I changed the wheels then I know they were no where near as bad as the picture above.

Who did the MOT? I would have challenged the fail on the discs looking at that picture. The testers manual states:

"h. the condition and security of brake drums and discs h. a brake disc or drum insecure, cracked or excessively scored, pitted or worn"

Ask the test station for your discs and pads back as you plan to appeal to VOSA, then watch their faces drop Wink

Got to agree with Brumlee, Discs are not part of the MOT only whether the brakes work or not. Thumbs Up

You'll always get rust (and brake dust) on the outside egde of brake disks,, it's nothing to worry about. Did they measure the width of the disk as per LR guidelines?

The exact reasons for the failure of the discs were

Nearside front (inside) Brake disc(s) excessively worn [3.5.1h]
Offside (inside) brake disc(s) excessively worn [3.5.1h]

Section 3.5.1h reads as follows

a brake disc or drum insecure, cracked or excessively scored, pitted or worn

As the brake discs were excessively worn on the inside this can only have been caused by the flaking rust as the pads operate on the outside of the discs.

The 3rd failure point was as follows

Exhaust emits an excessive level of metered smoke for a turbo charged engine [7.4.B.2]

Section 7.4.B.2 reads

Vehicles first used on or after 1 August 1979 After 6 free accelerations, the mean of the last 3 smoke levels is: for turbocharged engines more than 3.00m -1

No need for a challenge, that picture does not show the real damage, I had a good look at both discs and the inside was a lot thinner in places - I did try taking a photo of this but unfortunately it was too fuzzy (mobile)

You sure they dont mean "inside" as in the face of the disc that faces the inside of the vehicle, and not actually the inside of the disc itself?

They are checked in section 3.5 for the following

g. contamination of brake discs and drums by leaking brake fluid, oil or grease.

and

h. the condition and security of brake drums and discs

They explained it to me and it was definitely the bit in the middle (the vented part) and not the part of the discs that come into contact with the pads.

I expect that they are concerned that pressure from the pads could break the disc if they had to be applied extremely hard for some reason.

Possibly, Im just pleased that they were covered under the mot warranty (apart from the excess) as I didnt expect to have to replace them at such a low mileage.
