Fault code reader from cust relations

What I don't understand is that presumably the car generates the fault code(s) and passes it to the fault code reader when it is plugged in, why can't the car just display the code on the dash/Satnav screen.

Well yes.

I think one or two cars do

Cars have moved on a lot since the industry standard diagnostic port was created in 1995? (Much more display screens and computing and integration )

Manufactures Comply with the standard.

And everyone would moan if it was changed

Manufacturers could not only easily have the DTC displayed on the screen but also the description and also possible solutions. I work on fast jets and that where we’re at, but we have found that there’s still faults the computers can’t diagnose.

Replies Thumbs Up
I understand that experience may be required to interpret some codes but why they cannot be displayed on a facia screen is beyond me.
