Fault Codes

Does anyone know long fault codes get retained in the memory of the system?

I get occasional messages of "restricted performance" without any sign of any performance being restricted. It generally goes away after the car sits for an hour or two. Curious to know more, but don't have the diagnostic kit myself - or the time to take it to the dealer each time either!
