No it does not smoke all the time, just after a long period of inactivity or after a purge. Depending on the temperature and humidity the otherwise invisible stream looks more like a declaration of a new pope. More than one of us have had a neighbour or spouse call the fire brigade so it might be worth mentioning the device to them!Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
Yes , fired up , on cue 3 deg 2008 ,hse, it does what it says .

Ideal, after many many runs with the webasto software during october it had started behaving and running correctly on the timer!
3 degrees this morning started the engine and away it went! Cured thanks to all the great info and people on this site! So thanks to you all
If anyone in the plymouth/tavistock area wants to use the webasto adapter and software for checking their FHB out let me know....

Do any lights on the dash illuminate when it's working or do I just look for the smioke??
TFC fired it up a few months ago, but I haven't noticed it working during the current cold snap, temp showing 3 and 4's on the dash.
Thanks

I don't think there's a dash warning Mark, most people wire their own in.
Mine seems to work fine fortunately but doesn't smoke at all however, the car warms up within the first mile or two and there is a very definite pong, almost like aviation fuel, when it's running.

Success! Fitted the FBH remote, and it worked first time! Love the sound of the ignition sequence and the smell has a certain 'parfum d'aviation' hasn't it!

Odd seeing smoke
It may have fired up before but I noticed it today & I didn't know what it was & first thought engine was on fire followed by popping the bonnet & then thinking it must be the radiator. Few miles down the road & temp stable was baffled until getting online.
Still don't really know what it does but at least it isn't needing to go into the garage.

It must be the FBH time of year - my inbox is busy again!
To 'do away' with a few uncertaties:
FBH works with any of the doors open.
FBH works with the bonnet open.
FBH works with the airbag light on.
FBH will not run if the low fuel light is on.
FBH is set not to work with a battery voltage below 10v and above 16v.
There is a 20second delay if the voltage drop below 10v before the FBH will start to shut down.
There is a 6second delay if the voltage rises above 16v before the FBH will start to shut down.
Under control of the ATCM:
FBH starts when the EXTERNAL TEMP is 5.5deg or below (5deg on the inst diplay)
FBH starts up in parking heater mode (full burner) until the coolant is 88deg (1/4 to on the temp guage)
Once the coolant is 88deg the FBH drops back to supplemental heating and will cylce between the two modes.
It goes back to parking heater mode (full burner) if the coolant drops below 65deg.
If the coolant remains above 88deg the FBH goes into standby until the coolant drops below 65deg.
FBH shuts down when the EXTERNAL TEMP is 6deg or above.
The temp are those show in the Webasto Prog and vary from those show in the Land Rover Manual!
If your FBH is not working, on a day where the external temp is 4degs or lower, the engine won't be able to maintain 'normal' coolant temp at tickover. So when you are sat in a layby eating your egg and bacon butty there will be no heat from the heater!
The FBH errors are held in NonVolatile Memory. So even when the power/fuse is removed the errors are not errased.
If the Webasto oval control is fitted, all errors (including 'lock-out') are erased when it starts the FBH.
Hope this helps.

Mine fired up yesterday for the first time (don't use the car much anymore) and it was -1. Forgot about the smell and new neighbours must have thought car was on fire as I started it and went back inside and let it run for five minutes before I went out to the smoke Alex
Leaving the car unattended and running, does invalidate your insurance Mark.
