FBH still running after engine warmed up. |
|
Please bear with me on this, I'm a relative noob to the D3 world!!!
A couple of times my FBH has fired up when the temp. display is showing around 5 degrees or less.
Engine and cabin warm up relatively quickly as expected.
However, even after a 30 mile motorway run, when I turn the car off and get out, I have noticed the FBH still runs on for a short period before shutting down.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't it shut down whilst driving once the coolant reaches a set temperature (63 deg)??
Any Ideas??
Cheers, Chris.

Many thanks for prompt replies!!
However, after a 30 mile journey, with ambient air temperature of say 5 degrees, shouldn't my engine coolant have reached or exceeded the 75 degree point to tell the FBH to shut down?
Cheers, Chris.

Depends on the driving really. If you do a 30 minute run at speed, on a motorway for example, then I would expect it to have shut off after 30 minutes. However, if you slow down or long enough for the engine to cool below 75 degrees, then it could fire up again.
The engine will not maintain 75 degrees if sat in traffic!
The FBH also has different modes, it will run at full power on a cold engine, but will go to a lower power (idle) when the is warm but not at 75 dgrees. I dont have the exact parameters here, but I have read this somewhere.

Just want to check on this as mine didn't start this morning despite temp being 3 Degrees C. Is it supposed to fire up when I wake the car. (eg unlock the doors), or only when I start the engine??
(I have feeling I've read that the fuel light will stop it coming on so that may have been the problem this morning?)

Hi Jim,
From what I understand, It should fire up when you start the engine, if air temp. is below 5 degrees, and coolant temp. is below 75 degrees.
However, if your low fuel light is on then it wont activate.
Cheers, Chris.

Just to be pedantic, its BELOW 6 degrees ambient air temp. Fuel warning lamp will prevent fire-up, as will low voltage I think
There have been a few cases of the FBH locking out, if it does not startup properly for a preset number of times it will lockout and need to be reset. Either by a dealer, or an Autologic, or MVS system.
It takes about a minute after engine start on a cold morning to get fired up. If you look in the left front wheel arch, at the front edge, you will see a small exhaust pipe and some heat shielding. You should see smoke and steam emitting from this exhaust. Put your hand near the end to feel the exhaust coming out. (careful - its hot)
The internal fan will run on after engine off, for about a minute.

We had frost at the weekend and altho by the time I got to go out the windscreen had been cleared by the sun the car Temp read 3Degs C.
However, FBH didnt kick in. Was OK all last winter tho.
So I am assuming that I need it reset by a dealer.
Will check one more time when its next goes cold before booking it in though.

As long as it is 5 or below it will stay fired up , even you drive 1000miles , it does however go onto a low power mode, Only when the outside temp gets above 6 will it turn off.
Thats what webasto say. 'Just because you're breathing doesn't mean you're alive'

I'm not sure thats quite right TBH Presuming your engine coolant reaches 75oC it will switch off.

The ATCM cancels supplementary heating if the ambient temperature increases to 5 °C (41 °F), the engine coolant temperature increases to 75 °C (167 °F), or the engine stops. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I am just reading the actual webasto manual for this FBH heater, Mine packed up so purchased one from webasto and this was in the fitting instructions.
In order to minimise the battery's workload the heater
switches from full-load operation to part-load operation
after reaching a water temperature of 72 °C.
In this mode of operation the heater operates with
extremely low noise and particularly low power and fuel
consumption
