Interesting vids,
I think that as a general rule a wagon takes some 14 times longer to come to a complete halt than a car............
But seeing a truck stopped in its tracks like that with that wall - WOW !
But lets be fair, being a 2CV really deserves a medal or a section order......its French, and it has all the structural integrity of a tissue paper.
Danny.

The green VW Polo (or was it a Pug 104) was virtually vapourised too! All old cars in the queue though - would be interesting to line up a set of 21st century super minis and see how they'd fareSteve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Nah... I won't comment on the first part of that statement but I agree with the second one...
That said, I am not that sure that the DIII will get those 5 stars... Especially when compared to other cars in various shocks. The DIII, even though it seems to have crumple zones, might just be too heavy when hitting something else. I am not sure that the 2CV (Or a first generation Austin Mini... ) would fare better against a DIII than against that truck...

For the UK National Statistics on crashes see report titled Cars: Make and Model: The Risk of Driver Injury in Britain: 1996 – 2000 which was issued in 2003. The report can be found at
http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_...508327.pdf
This shows that the risk if being killed or seriously injured in a Discovery (models up to November 1998) is 3 times less than that for an Espace (June 91 to March 97).

Missed this whilst I was away.
Sounds typical 5th Gear rubbish to me. Remember, this is the program that did a demonstration of a rollover accident using a xx year old Range Rover Classic to demonstrate the 'danger' of 4x4's in sudden maneuvers. I would like to see that one repeated with a Disco 2, or 3.
Also remember the rumpus that Tom Ford caused when he upset just about everybody by driving the D3 down a sensitive green lane at some considerable speed.
I am starting to think that this program is anti 4x4. Although Quentin W seems to be on side, I am surprised he allows his name to be put to such things after recent publicity for him in LRO magazine.

I've just had a reply to my email, anyone else had one? It just said about the Espace and D1 being the same price, and the chassis design going up to 2004 which is the same age as the Espace. Not a D3 owner

What like this ???

Hi Richard,
Thank you for contacting Fifth Gear with your opinions. I’m sorry to hear that you were disappointed with this feature but we greatly appreciate your feedback and all of your comments will be taken on board by the production team.
The purpose of the Fifth Gear crash test between the Land Rover Discovery and Renault Espace was not to discredit either vehicle but simply to find out which faired better in an off-set head on collision. It is very common for people to assume that a 4x4 is always a safer option than an MPV and we set out to investigate the factual accuracy of this generalisation.
In this instance we used a Discovery which, although older than the Espace, was made with the same chassis as a newer vehicle of the equivalent value to the Espace. Essentially the “ladder†design of the chassis was used in the Discovery up until mid 2004 and the crucial point was that a vehicle of this age would now be worth the same monetary value as the 2003 Espace. Our test, therefore was credible in that we used two vehicles that were comparable as an option for a family wishing to spend £10,000.
In no way did we suggest that a crash between different vehicles, for example a brand new 4x4 and a brand new MPV would end with the same results. I quote Jon’s closing comments in the piece…
“The result of the match is clear – in this crash between these two cars you’d be better off in the MPV. Which many 4x4-loving school run parents wouldn’t have expected. If you’re in the market for a new family motor, don’t automatically assume that bigger is better.â€
Fifth Gear will be back next Monday at 8.00pm on Channel 5, but in the mean time don’t forget to visit the website for regular updates on our filming progress: it's the only place you'll get a sneak preview of what's still to come!

The Defender is the safest one around!!
When you look at the risk of injury, there is not a lower figure than the 27% for the Defender. Range is next, Disco is not much worse, then the others
Don't want to get hit in a 2CV though - 80% risk of injury, that's baaaad

My Defender will do 60mph downhill after a long run up and a strong tail wind. Its probably low cause most collisions in these happen at low speed by default

Defenders are great head on, but side impacts might not be so clever
So next time you see a 2CV with its ban the bomb sticker you can vapourise them by running over them in the D3 DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone
