Fifth Gear - Disco Vs Espace

Another unbiased press report. Crying or Very sad How old was that Discovery? I wish they'd used a D3.

Which Espace was it? If it was the previous model than comparing it against the DII would be correct Confused

Forget it - just been over to five.tv and its the latest Espace IV (3 year old design) against a DII (17 years old assuming DII is basically the same as a D1) - unfair test!

The Discovery in the crash test with the Espace is a TDI 300 judging from the lights at the rear and the internal dash. The TDI 300 used the heavy ladder chassis construction with body attached as used by Land Rover since 1947.

However, the D3 is a modern design with an "Integrated Body Frame" incorporating a monocoque body which means that it is not possible to read across results of a crash test between the TDI 300 with a Espace to a D3.

What an absolute disgrace!

I couldnt believe what i was seeing !

First of all, saying that the Disco 1 was worth 10k just to compare it against a more modern car. Then pitting it against a 3 or 4 year old Espace was nothing short of a disgrace.

Why wasnt one of the other 4x4's in the article used, say a Cayenne.
I cant help feeling that this was a deliberate act and biased in its extreme to fuel the debate by lentil eating flip flops.

Ive now lost all respect for that particular programme.

I would like to hear what Clarkson would have said and i bet that he wouldnt have had that twaddle on his programme.

(rant off)

I also noticed that the car seat in the back of the disco was a Renault car seat. Makes me wonder if Renault were paying for this excercise?

Why not express your distaste to this crappy comparison by e-mailing them at:

So they're infact crashing a late 1960's design (1st Generation Discovery launched in 1989 but was completely based on the original Range Rover, launched in 1970) against a brand new early 2000's design 5* NCAP rated Espace?

Come on Fifth Gear, you can do better than that. Government sponsored were we?

The idea of the test was not to say a Disco is bad. It was using the car as a generic 4x4 that a family may go buy thinking that you are always going to be safer in a 4x4 compared to saloons/mpv's etc. I think that the idea was to get buyers to not assume that a 4x4 is going to be the safest car. That aside, I agree with the rest of you. It's a bad comparison as all 4x4's are not the same and the only real kind of test would be to crash test every car model into every other car model in order to get definative results of what might happen in the event of....

The comparison was a mis-match. That said I was shocked at the extensive damage caused to the 300 Tdi. For 10 years I’d driven around feeling safe.

Furthermore there are no 300 Tdis worth £10k, the car in the test was worth no more than £6/7k if a top spec 1998/9.
 D3 gone for now

If they want to do a fair comparison, compare 1995 300 Tdi Discovery with 1995 Espace Rolling Eyes

Ah, but are there any 1995 Espace's left.
In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Probably all written off in 'fair' crash tests against ten year-old discos

Just seen the repeat of this, and sent an email. I almost feel sorry for the person who's going to recieve it, I let out all the anger I've ever experienced Razz

It ended along the lines of 'I look forward to hearing from you, first to prove you do care about your watchers, and secondly to find out how much Renault paid you.' Very Happy
