First Day Off-Roading and...

Hello All,

Had my first proper day off road the weekend at Rockingham on one of the LRO Adventure Club training days – would certainly recommend it. A couple of die-hard Defender owners were surprised at how capable the D3 was (I was only one there) as was allowed to tackle obstacles only modified Defenders were and breezed them.

One problem tho – got back after wading bonnet deep in mud and water I got a screaming EPB.

Have read thro threads and pdf’s about adjusting etc but is there anything simple I can do to start with eg. Give it a good jet wash? What actually screams, is it cable slipping on a pulley or something? Am fairly mechanically minded but haven’t messed about with cars really since my Cortina and Vauxhall Magnum days.

Need a bit of confidence before I have a mess so any advice would be much appreciated.

Their is a thread about it on here with a link to a pdf of the manual one of our members as it for download in their gallery. If you click on gallery above and then search and then enter EPB you will find plenty of reading information.

There's the workshop manual instructions in there.

Thanks guys for the quick response.

The brake came on originally with a part scream. When next used it the scream was a little longer so I pressed button to release before engagement so don't know whether will come on at all without a light appearing on dash?

Having read thro recommended I think I will have a crack at the adjustment first but would still like to understand (if it is the case) how mud and grime has caused the issue?

The grit will have got between the shoes and drum, and will have ground a small amount of material from the surface of the shoes.

A clean and readjust should sort it out. Lubricate the contact points between the shoes and backplate with a bit of brake grease.

Don't keep using the brake if you have a screamer, it ruins the epb module.

Thanks Gareth, did the adjust and bedding in today and am pleased to say seems to be working ok again without any noise. Very Happy Wasn't expecting that access hole in the drum to be so small and couldn't hear any clicks from the adjuster so had to hope 8 'levers' back of the screwdriver equalled 8 clicks.

Also wasn't expecting the red parkbrake light on the dash to blink during bedding in? ...but went off when car defaulted back to normal mode.
