Fitting an aftermarket hands free phone kit.
I cannot be bothered with waiting for the blue tooth phone option, so I have just fitted a Sony Ericcson hands free kit.
I have fitted this kit into several cars, and the D3 is by far the trickiest.
The processor box I have fitted up behind the dash board on the right hand side, next to the airconditioning pipes. I secured it with zip ties to the framework around these pipes. It is a very awkward fit.
The speaker I have fitted to the passenger footwell, just in front of the bonnet release. It is fitted with velcro.
The handset cradle is mounted on a bracket that I purchased from Dashmount.co.uk this is excellent and fits very neatly next to the left side of the radio.
The microphone is at the top of the drivers (RH) A post, and secured with a tiny velcro pad.
All the wires are hidden, and I had to drill one small hole to get the handset cable into the dash. The speaker and handset cable can be passed from the left of the cabin to the processor through the gap behind the heater with the help of a long straight piece of wire to guide them through. You will have to drop down the trim panels from the top of the footwells to do this. You will also have to release the plastic surround from around the radio/satnav/aircon controls.
The microphone wire is very thin, and is easily pushed into the edge of the A post trim, then under the black felt door surround, to enter the dash board through a conveinient gap in the trim.
I had to drill a hole in the dash behind the dashmount bracket to get the cable through. If you don't want to drill, then the cable will have to hang down to the cup holder area before it can be passed into the dash.
Getting power to the system is a problem, as I could not find an accesible permanent live to patch into. I have fitted a plug into the accessory power socket to provide power, but its not ideal, as the handsfree will not work with the keys out.
Gareth - sounds good, look forward to seeing the pictures. Just such a shame that LR are making such a pigs ear of sorting out a dealer fit unit as the great advantage would be the promised total integration. Like you I am seriously thinking going the route of an aftermarket kit - probably a Parott 3100, as I am reluctant to buy Nokia kit in view of their involvement with the PTI system!

Pics now posted, bit naff qauality I'm afraid, had to use the use the phone to take them! hence no shot of phone in cradle.

Interested to know how you removed the radio, to fit the universal bracket? I am tryiny to access the aux input which I hope is on the rear on my base radio. There is no jack socket behind centre consul.

I did'nt remove the radio. My kit does not mute the radio. To mount the bracket, I removed the grey trim that goes around the center of the dash. It pulls off from the bottom each side of the cigarette lighter/ashtray/aux sockets.
I think once you have this trim off, the radio removal will be obvious.

Just had a Nokia car kit fitted.
Ref the aux port. I mentioned to the fitter that if he could get to the radio end of the aux port, mabe he could sort it so that the audio comes through the car speakers. When he got the radio out to see, the aux port is on a 'multi-block' of some sort and can't be 'un-picked'.
Also, as the radio has a mute function, it would be no point. A soon as the phone is used, it would mute the speakers ....
Anyway, the car kit is fitted niceley. No holes drilled. No wires showing, and no idea where he put the speaker, but I sounds great and I can't find it .................Somewhere in-between my old D3 and what's to come next .........
Which kit did you buy and who fitted it? I'm looking at the Nokia 616 car kit with the separate screen but I'm not sure where they'll put the screen without it looking a bit odd.

Its on old kit (5 yrs old, now in its 3rd car) origionally for a 6210, but now with my aging 6310i. Not sure who the fitting co was as my company organised it, but I guess it was one of the many professional fitting firms out there...............Somewhere in-between my old D3 and what's to come next .........

Hello guys, I'm back the peace is shattered. Have you seen the new TomTom Go 700 handsfree kit. It has a built in bluetooth mobile handsfree kit and all you do is plug in to the power socket and go. Comes with maps of Europe. Cost around £550 from www.mobilefun.co.uk in about 5 weeks time. Can't wait.
