Fitting American type tow hitch

Tried a search but there seems no threads.

Has anybody knowledge about or comments on fitting this type of towbar? It seems ideal for the project I have going on.

There is a tow hitch for the Australian market that plugs in just the same as the ball one. In fact, there are two - with different heights for the 2" hole. I use one to fit a winch which is interchangabe with the fron hitch.

The one issue using it in UK is that it is not type approved , could have insurance issues.

The type approval requirement is only for towing a trailer and does not apply in countries outside the E.U., such as Australia. I suppose countries outside the EU. make their own arrangements to suit themselves. Which leads to the odd siyuation, it IS legal for towing in any E.U. country if it is plugged into a vehicle registered in Australia.

Not necessarily, I believe this is part of the Vienna convention to do with cross border use of vehicles whereby if something on a vehicle or vehicle combination is legal in a signatory country, it is legal for a that vehicle to be used in other signatories countries, however not all EU countries are signatories to the Vienna convention and those that are dont always fully comply with it.

A prime example is A frame towing, perfectly legal for recovery and emergency use across the EU but not for sole purpose of planned transportation, however the DVLA have said that a car with an A frame attached is for the purposes of UK law a trailer and therefore if it complies with trailer regulations it can be used for extended towing purposes, so the regulations are if over 750kg it must be braked, if brakes are fitted to weight bearing wheels they must be operational regardless of weight and you need appropriate lights. So fairly simple to fit an inertia or electronic braking system to the towed car and either wire a towing connector to the car light circuits or use a trailer board, job done. Yep, but you try using it in Spain for example, they will order you to detach the car and maybe fine you as not legal except for emergencies and recovery.
