Fitting an Onboard Air Compressor

Hello all, this weekend I undertook the surprisingly easy task of installing a hard mounted air compressor for inflating tires at the end of trail runs.

Will that reach your rear wheels? I only ask as I have the T Max version (looks identical and the hose only just reaches if it is held by a second person!

Nathan,

great job,

on the OZ LR 3, on that side of the car is where the battery is located. and the opposite is where there is a cover, gap, is where we can place our second battery.

My question is, now that your on board compressor is there, you have lost the option of a second battery?

Interesting installation..... Confused

I just bought the Viair400P which is the same (portable) system. At the risk of being stupid - can you tell me what is the point in 'installing' this particular system Question

AFAIK making a permanent installation simply limits your range as the hose is not infinite. It also takes up space in the engine bay which could be used for better things (2nd battery).

My system is exactly the same, but it can move between cars. However, Viair do make systems for installing permanently in vehicles......

Pelyma - That's a bit like saying "I've got a Rolex and the only difference is that mine has a battery" Shocked

T-Max is a cheap copy of the Viair compressor and usually sells for about £50 from Paddock. OTOH, these Viair 400's are normally in excess of £200!!! Wink

1. Yes, the hose reaches all wheels (I checked before mounting the compressor)

2. Yes, I have conceded the unexercised option of installing a 2nd battery simultaneously while using this location. I could have mounted the compressor in the rear, but I liked this spot and do not have a second battery, so...

3. The 400P is very similar, but requires being stowed in the rear, and requires removing the battery cover to connect the aligator clips. The battery cover is a royal pain to fit back on. This way, I am hardwired so always have power, and there is nothing additional to store in the rear. Most of my friends have CO2 PowerTanks, so they fill their tires in seconds. The added time to retrive the compressor from my storage boxes in the rear, and re-stow it when complete (tie down straps, etc...), was just simply taking too long, and my friends often grew impatient.

But the hose is the same. Anyway my rolex has a battery and it only cost £2K are you saying its not real Shocked

I fitted an under-bonnet compressor 4 or 5 months back, in front of the battery box and behind the expansion tank. It worked pretty well for the first few months, but dirt, mud and especially the engine-bay heat took its toll.

My next one is going in the boot!

Diff Locks, Turbochipped, Raised Air Intake, 220volts Onboard, Onboard Compressor, Large Bore Exahust, Underbody Protection, One or two Other Mods as well.
Other toys include, Argo Avenger 8x8, Tatra 6x6 Motorhome (Being Built)

It is in the area that is normally the footwell for the mid row seats. This space is normally inaccessible in commercials, but Chris has modified his to store tools, etc, and the air compressor and storage tank, as well as a PC and some sub bass speakers!
 IE - 05 D3 TDV6 HSE - Zambezi Silver
SA - 07 VW Golf TDI - White - Sold!
