Fitting radio remote buttons to base

Hi all, just thought I'd post these separately for anyone that's interested:

This is how to fit steering wheel mounted remote controls for the CD-400 base radio.

1. Order switch module part # XPD-500-500-WVH, its approx £36.
2. Remove two Torx head screws behind right hand side of steering wheel;
3. Insert tool* into small slot on RH of steering wheel (with hook pointing towards you), push away from you and pull out to release airbag module clip. Repeat on other side.
4. Remove airbag module but do not disconnect cables, slide out of the way to reveal two plastic 'feet' of old blank module.
5. Remove module, disconnecting multi-way plug.
6. Connect new module and clip into place.
7. Replace airbag module, push firmly to lock ensuring that module is located correctly.
8. Replace two Torx screws.

* Tool details: A steel rod, diameter approx 3mm (I used a piece of a wire coat hanger). bend a 5mm hook at right angle on end. Approx 100mm up rod, fashion a ring to enable it to be pulled. The land rover tool has a cross-bar here. Picture in my gallery.

The new buttons will control the radio with no other adjustments required.

Care is advised removing the airbag module. If in doubt remove both battery cables first.

Hope this helps!

That's a very good question.

The answer is no. Maybe it has to be enabled in software? Maybe that functionality is contained within the infotainment module which of course we don't have?

I'd be interested to know the answer!

That is great!

I'm new to this forum, and new to Land Rovers. I recently purchased a base V6 LR3 with coil springs, which is a very rare car here in the US. I assume this upgrade is for the base model stero, such as I have here:

Andy, I notice you have the Cruise Control Buttons also, were these Factory fitted or did you install these at the same time Question

Great tip!!

Is all the wiring already in place at the wheel? Does the cruise control work too?

Excellent tip! Many thanks for this.

Just to confirm - you didn't have to get the buttons 'enabled' by the dealer / testbook, did you?
Also - I see you have added the cruise control buttons. Do these work on your car, or are they purely decorative?

Thanks too for the pictures- marvellous stuff.

No, the radio buttons work 'out of the box'. The cable is the same one that plugs into the old, blank module.

My car has cruise from new, though, as an option.

Ah, I wonder if your steering wheel came pre-wired because you ordered cruise control. I didn't and wonder if perhaps there will be no pre-wiring for the radio?

No, I'm 90% sure the cores are there in the multi-way plug for the buttons whether you have cruise or not.

In the same way that the cores are there in the other side for cruise even if you don't have it - although cruise has to be software-enabled.

Re: Fitting radio remote buttons to base - with pics

Hi alinton, fantastic article and pictures.

One question, as I’m going to have a go at this myself, is that the LR part number.

Cheers and thanks for spending the time to post all the info. Very Happy

Yes it is, but the # symbol means 'number'!

Thanks again alinton, I have just rung my dealer and the switches are available here in Australia, so I will be ordering a set and fitting them as soon a possible.

Could I just make a suggestion relating to the safety air bags.

No matter how confident you may be when working of the electro of your D3 or any vehicle fitted with safety air bags, I would strongly advise anyone wanting to carry out this installation, that you heed alinton caution and disconnect the battery before you do any work near the safety air bag system.

I use to make and install car alarm systems and I also supplied them on to other install companies.

After hearing some of the nightmare scenarios relating to the cost of replacing safety air bags that had been accidentally tripped while carrying out installs of car alarms, sound systems and mobile phones, we dropped the line.

I have also heard of a number of deaths caused by accidental triggering of the safety air bag system which has hit people in the head while they were working around the dash in vehicles in the USA.

I would imagine it is a lot easier to get lost codes replaced than it is to get lost heads replaced, but I could be wrong. Rolling Eyes

Cheers and thanks again.
