Flat battery due to radio coming on when car is locked? |
|
Had a strange problem this morning.
Radio had the "low voltage" message and when turning the car on it had a "'HDC fault" and wouldn't turn over.
Trying a couple of things. I took the key out and locked the doors and then the radio came on. I'm thinking this is the cause of the flat battery.
Anyone heard of this happening when the car is locked and keys out of the ignition?
I tried to jump start the D3 by doing the following (as per the manual)
+ve donor to +ve D3
-ve donor to chassis D3
idle the donor for a few minutes and then try and start the D3, no luck.
Some questions?
-anyone seen this problem before?
-I've got a dual battery (traxide setup), can I jump start it from that? What is the procedure?
-I've got a 12v battery charger, do I connect the -ve terminal from that to the battery or the chassis like I would for a jump?

Managed to jump start it from the 2nd battery. +ve from the 2nd battery to +ve on the main battery.
Drove it for 30 mins and then it started ok again. Drove another 20 mins and now it won't start again. Coming up with the HDC fault again.
Apart from getting it to LR, not sure what I can do next.
recon it is a dead battery, will get it checked tomorrow.

Either battery or alternator. Call out your breakdown service and they can check.

Sounds like dead battery to me. If you have a multimeter, and you still managed to get the car running, you could measure the battery voltage when the car is off and when on. Mine, on an old battery, gave if I recall right 12-something volt when engine off, about 15 volt when engine on, i.e. alternator working fine. If the alternator did not function (i.e. voltage not increasing), then even a good battery would not benefit.

I ended up getting both the main and 2nd battery changed.
The main battery had a dead cell but this was only detected on a 2nd test. The second battery had a leak and was actually pretty dead so got that replaced with a Optima yellow top
All seems to be running well now.
What I'm still struggling with is why my radio came on when the key was out of the ignition and doors locked. While this probably caused me to get the batteries checked I'm concerned that this will happen again and the radio coming on overnight will drain the main battery. I haven't been able to get this to happen again but just worried there might be a strange problem that will occur again as a time when it is real inconvenient.
