Flat battery (ies)

Hi, first post sorry if in wrong place.

My D4 2016 Ecostop/start stopped working at the start of lockdown. Otherwise running fine. It's been driven every few days in lockdown for short trips only.

Yesterday I do a couple local runs maybe an hour's driving all day then a 45 minute run to nearby town. All is well but then I park up, do my chore and get back to the vehicle to find that it never locked, absolutely nothing works or lights up. Jump leads get it started but all the way home it's flashing occasionally ABS Fail, Parking brake fail, and maybe other errors too fast to see along with various clicking noises from relays all over.

So, main battery and perhaps secondary seem dead, the reason why so sudden is unknown. I leave it running for 3 hours on the drive thinking it would charge battery. Nope. Soon as I switched off it's all dead again.

So, before I jump it and go wait to be ripped off at the dealer, SHOULD a 45 minute drive home and 3 hours ticking over have recharged the battery to any degree? maybe a charging fault would explain why it drained in the first place?

It's my first disco, first automatic and I have not the slightest interest in tinkering. It's just a big beautiful tool that I love and I'm definitely the dealer's favourite type of newbie owner! All suggestions welcome.

Thanks

It happens, I suspect your battery is goosed, mine did similar, went out, came back, two hours later it wouldn’t turn over. Mine is the same age as yours, battery failed before it was three years old as did others on here.
Take it to the dealer you will spend a fortune, in excess of £400 where as you could do it yourself, for less than half.

Thank you, always good to know we're not alone!

So new battery needed rather than mess about with chargers?

You can try a charge, but I think it’s past that.
Your Stop/Start battery may well be ok, mine is still original, if the Stopt light was on when it failed to work then I suspect it needs changing also, if the Stop Start just didn’t work an no lights it could have been the main battery dragging it down.

The BMS will need resetting after changing for optimum charging.

I'm in a similar situation. Picked up one kids from school at 1pm. Tried to go back for the other two at 2pm but the car was totally dead. No power at all, even to open the door. Entered via the passenger side and tried the ignition and it is completely dead. I have a CTEK 5.0 running on it at the moment trying to charge the battery, but after two hours, it is still dead. Is the battery knackered? Should I get a flicker of power after two hours of charging? Charger is warm to the touch, so is doing something.

If the battery has had it, I can order a new one and have about an hour to do so. Quick reply would be great!

For what it costs I would get a new one from Tanya https://www.tayna.co.uk/ next day delivery.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago and a new battery sorted it.

Could be a failing alternator. Mine gave up on me with similar issues and the indy that fixed it said it's because they're mounted low under the engine so tend to get a lot of water on them when driving in the wet.

Also from a different thread

Could be a dodgy engine to chassis earth strap, try putting a jump lead from the engine lifting point to the body and see if that helps.

I've been working from home for over a year so 99% of my journeys have been to school or Tesco - all around a couple of miles. I've been charging the battery when I had a dashboard of "special programmes off" using the CTEK and that has been fine. However, it flashed a "special programmes off" earlier in the week but had been fine since (it warmed up a bit outside). So, I suspect the battery has been "running on fumes" because I didn't charge it. However, I've never had it completely dead in the past. Always managed to get a radio or headlights on or a clicking when trying to start. This time there is absolutely nothing. 3 hours of charging later and still dead.

The good news is that it is a Tayna battery and that there is a 4 year warranty that expires in October this year. The bad news is the inconvenience of it all.

If it is the alternator then I didn't see any lights on the dash (I've had the problem before on a previous alternator) and I suspect that charging the battery should give me something. But nothing even after 3 hours?

I'll try the jumper lead earth trick just to be sure.

I'll let you know how good the Tayna warranty system is, if the Battery is still bricked.

Thanks all.

Disconnected the CTEK 5 charger and did the earth strap trick with a jump lead but dead as a Dodo. Reconnected the charger and rather that being on step "2" the green light started to flash. Looked it up in the manual (I know, drastic measures) and the CTEK cannot detect a battery. Put a multimeter across the terminals and it registers 0.2V. So, probably too low for the CTEK to detect it and start pumping juice into it.

Looks like a warranty job to me.

Bought another battery from Tayna and then used the packaging, plugs etc to return the broken one under warranty. It took them around 5 days but they tested it, found a fault and credited my Paypal account.

So, their battery service is good and you cannot fault their warranty system either.

Thanks for all the advice.

Daf.

That’s a good result. Thumbs Up

The problem with modern batteries is that once they drop below about 85% charge, they are goosed forever, you can’t bring them back. The CTEK is a good bit of kit but it’s not smart enough. My last battery would go through the cycle on the CTEK 5 but as soon as it was finished and you tried to start the car. It was dead. The CTEK couldn’t detect the surface charge and that was it, new battery. If you have a Silver Calcium battery, especially a YUASA branded one and it goes flat, don’t waste your time on diagnosing, just buy an AGM.
