I was at a wedding in March and talking to the husband of one of the girls at work - he was lamenting the D4 was the last proper Land Rovers as it was the last with a ladder frame chassis.
He does a lot of off-roading (I don't do any so what do I know) but the comment sort of ties in with the above posts on strength and durability.
Bit like Mercedes in the 90's when quality dropped off alarmingly (or so I've been told)

Good grief, you have somebody paying up to £90k and you have these issues! Based on this I am also now worried about the New Defender (I'm hoping this may replace my 08 D3 in a few years time).
Terrible indeed!

My plan was to look at the car at JLR in Solihul be blown away by the vehicle then head home via the dealer and order one. However I was not blown away and after a cooling down period over the last few days I cant find the inspiration to order one. I am finding my self looking at alternatives.
It is a stunning car but its lost its rufty tufy macho 4x4 appeal.In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

The usual 4x4 trucks/pickups and G-Class.
The thing is nothing is even close to the D5 In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

G-Class looks 8) , but not cheap
I'm looking to retire early (hopefully at 55) so spending £70K on a car doesn't work

Really interesting update DG ......Well Done!
It's really disappointing that LR's profits soar as their quality controls suffer and it's hard not to suggest that the two facts aren't linked.
I went from the D4 to the FFRR but have always missed the well built chunkiness of the Disco and had given serious thought to buying the D5. I recall speaking with a dealer recently just before changing my car from a FFRR. At that time I was undecided on whether to buy the RRS AB or another FFRR and he told me that the RRS was nice but he could see where Land Rover had saved money on the RRS over the FFRR. And I guess the problem as I see it is that the D5 can't ever be a well made as a FFRR, or even the RRS because if it were, people like me would save thousands and buy one.

Another thing to be mindful of is the seat colouring ...I appreciate that hundreds of bums had sat on them at the show since opening a few days ago but they were looking very worn and discoloured already. Not something I saw anywhere else at the show.
I found this at the Peterborough LR show in the new LR vehicles on display especially the RR Autobiography the drivers seat was appalling for such a high end vehicle.D3 HSE

I bought a Jag with cream leather in 06 and a RRS in 10 - I've also had courtesy RR/LR vehicles with light leather and since only buy black as it wears the best - boring I know but the dye transfer and marks is appalling on light leather Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Once every few weeks, I wipe a a cloth with some leather cleaner over the driver's seat and it comes up a treat in a minute or two. How hard could it be to do the same?2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

A regular wipe over with Simoniz leather cleaner takes virtually all the muck and even jean dye off light leather in a jiffy and it keeps the leather from drying out.2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

I think as with any light coloured leather, it takes a certain amount of upkeep. I have Cirrus leather and I have to clean this every few weeks.
I do think that this is something that should be cleaned at the end of ever show day to keep the cars presented to the best of there ability, after all people will, or will not buy based on what they see when looking over a show car.2010 RR 5.0 Autobiography

A lot of people with black leather seem to consider it to be "maintenance free". In reality, the leather still needs to be treated just as regularly anyway, so having light leather is no extra work.2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
