Fluid/Oil Leak between Auto Gearbox and Engine
Noticed some oil on the driveway this afternoon. Checked the Defender first thinking it had to be the culprit, but sadly it turned out to be the Disco 3 . Removed the plates under the car and found the leak seems to be coming from the rubber grommet on the Auto-box. Don't think it is engine oil seems too clean.
I have searched the site but not found any similar references. Any advice re-assurance as to what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated.
In the foreground is the sump, leak seems to be coming from grommet on gearbox.

Not good news bearman this is something I dread on any car of mine,(and I've had to fix a few, but not the D3 just yet, thankfully). If it's engine oil then most likely the crankshaft rear oil seal is leaking, if it's transmission fluid then there must be a leak at the g/box front oil seal or possibly torque convertor. Either way it's a transmission removal job to access I'm afraid.......PS... I'm not sure what colour D3 transmission oil is, as I haven't had any dealings with it yet, someone else may be along to help.

Looks a lot like my picture:

It was the input shaft oilseal off the auto gearbox.
The good thing was the part is only about 15 euro.
The bad thing is the gearbox has to come out and that would cost about 2000 euro.
Luckely it was within my 3 months waranty when I bought it from Nene Overland.
So Nene fixed it for my together with the rest of the list I had.Roel

Nene Overland sold it to you with this problem Roel? ........ Ok,eventually they fixed it, but unforgiveable nonetheless. ........ No doubt there, as to the offending oil seal, apart from the different engine, it looks identical to bearman's, thanks for posting the pic.

It wasn't leaking when I got it.
It is a G4 when I bought it it had 14800 km at 3 years old, so very little. I know after the 2006 cahllenge it has been driven to marroco and used there for the Freelander 2 launch. I think it wasn't used much till it was sold by Nene to me.
I used it a lot in 3 1/2 months I double the km's and making long drives from The Netherlands to Southern Germany and Austria.
I collected it a week after Peterborough in 2008 and I think I noticed the leak somewhere end off november.
I checked the car thoroughfully at Nene's when I collected it. And I could not see anything wrong. It was standing inside and I crawled under and over.
The only thing I could say they could have cleaned the underside and the inside a little better. I couldn't see any defects. So I honestly think they couldn't know it was leaking and I doubt it was leaking when they sold it to me as I should have seen it earlier then.
It is clear I back-up Nene here. They did a good job selling the car to me. I was a little dissapointed having a list off smaller and bigger (like this oil leak) problems with my D3 at the end off the 3 months waranty period.
But they were nice, I had regular contact with them and we looked at having my D3 repaired in Holland but that was to expensive for Nene. Can't complain about that as the waranty conditions were that repairs were to be done at their shop and I knew that before buying. But still they were open to have a look what it would cost.
We managed to combine a trip to the UK for me for work with dropping the D3 off at Nene and they supplied me with a courtesy car for the duration off the job so on my way back I collected the D3 again and all items on my list were taken care off.
They even replaced the rearwindow as one off the heating parts didn't work.
I didn't have problems since.
So I am happy with buying the D3 and I am very pleased with the service off Nene Overland. I have no hessitation of buying a car of them again.Roel

Thanks Roel sounds like it is not as serious as i first suspected. Thought I was in the market for a new/recon gearbox. Will have to negotiate nicely regarding the labour however.

The labour is the problem, it's a big job getting the gearbox out and in again.Roel

can you believe it - on the way to LR for the gearbox - battery light comes on - cheers alternator.
Seems Roel your diagnosis was correct. LR Quoted ZAR12 000.00 to replace alternator, remove box, replace seal and refit gearbox. This includes seal of R55.00 plus 4 lts oil. This is equivalent to 1240.00 euro seems like a good deal to me. Looks like my local LR garage are not milking the system like there european counter parts.
I am just hoping and praying there are no surprises in the gearbox/torque converter when they remove it. Am also considering a megaflush for the old girl while this is going on will see what they want to charge.
