When forward progress halts........... |
|
When forward progress halts, in a non gijillion gizmo equiped 4x4, I know what to do. I want to know if anyone has come up with a good procedure to use in the LR3, when stuck in mud or snow.
Generally, I try reversing gently and, depending on how it feels, build up to violent, heavy throttle, rocking. This does not seem to work at all with my LR3 The problems with the LR include, vitually no seat of the pants feed back and once it is stopped, nothing seems to work to convice it to free itself.
PS. Thank you for your patience with my poor writing.

Exactly what I do... with a manual I think its easier to rock back and forth until the D3 moves... you can then keep the gas on and generally if you've made enough momentum, get out of trouble.

I don't think I made myself clear. My usual methods fail miserably. When the LR3 gets stuck it stays stuck.
The changes I have cosidered are-
Try sand mode
Floor it and ignore the noises and smells untill it goes into extended mode.
Hold the throttle on longer in both forward and reverse and hope the computer figures out something that works.
Pray to the god of regained traction(anybody got a name for the guy?)

DSC off and keep the power on, let the electronics sort it out, don't ease off the gas despite all the whizzing and whirring as that will prevent the electronics from sorting it all out.............. unless you manage to get all 4 wheels spinning............. then you are stuck and need a tow out

Yep, tried that and after about 20 times learned that everytime you change the terrain responce setting, it comes back on!

Thanks to all for the advise.
So try beating it longer. Ok , Will do . Any suggestions for a terrain response setting?

Gets a bit hair raising on a camber when all 4 wheels have no grip and you are sliding (mainly sideways but also slightly backwards) down the camber towards that tree ! I decided discretion might be a good idea at that stage and quickly reversed down the slope - and that was with the Locking Diff -. The limiting factor is seems to be the tyres - the standard ones just gum up with the sticky mud. Presumably this is also the limitation in snow -. DSC was off and all 4 wheels were turning.

In deep sand, this (planting your foot in the hope that it will come free) obviously doesn't work - 2.5 tonne of car + locking diffs and traction control makes for a very effective digging machine, as I found out yesterday
In soft stuff where you risk bottoming out the vehicle (even in extended mode), you end up on the chassis rails pretty quick-smart if you gun the car trying to get out. We were stuck on the crest of a sand dune. No amount of pulling (with a Jeep V8 ) would move it. Ended up digging for two hours, burying the spare wheel in the sand and using it as a winch point. Thank God for the winch - I only had it fitted two weeks ago!
