Thanks this is good advice, and I have done this.

It was clear that this was the route they are going down when I first took it back, as they at first refused to work on the car to tried and put blame on my wife.

Not sure how they can also prove there was no oil in the car or that we caused the damage by not maintaining it - especially as they've had it so long on and off over last 6 months (more than us).

Often driving it long distances (or at least told me they were) they never mentioned to me before it had any major oil loss (assuming they checked).

Three weeks before it went in, my wife drove kids down to Butlins and I checked the oil and topped it up a bit. Is there any possible very short term catastrophic oil loss due to parts of the engine failing?

I wont name this garage (in case they sue me for defamation) but they seem really unscrupulous. Confused

Sounds like time to take proper legal advice, be that solicitor or Citizen’s Advice.

Had disco 3/4 for near on 15 yrs and I'm pretty sure I'm yet to top the engine up at all.
So engine with somewhat lack of oil must be down to engine fault somewhere or even lack of when filling up at service or even forgot to?.
Can't think where but remember sometimes ago someone's car was serviced then tested and was seized as mechanic forgot to fill up very expensive mistake .
So would challenge them nowt to lose .

How reputable is the garage in question?

Are they a member of any professional organisation with arbitration?

Also do you have any form of legal cover to help you if you need to go down the legal route - these things can get very expensive very quickly of you choose to go that way
 Must stop buying shiny toys....
