Fridges.. talk to me

So we have one of those little electric cool box things at the moment, think it was about 30 quid. We do a reasonable amount of camping and are finding it’s a bit small and doesn’t really keep things as well as I’d like - we generally don’t have an electric hookup.

So what do people have? - 5 of us, 3 young kids. 5 days tops, though mostly long weekends etc - seems like the options are anything from a cool bag to a grand on an Engel. Confused.

Cheers!

I use an engel. I wont get 5 days from it unless I had a solar panel. But for a couple of days on a dual battery it works for me.

For all round practicality and price, you'd be very hard pushed to beat the Coleman range of cool boxes ( Xtreme range ). I have the large 70QT size and it is truly exceptional. In near heatwave conditions last year it kept ice for 5 full days. There are smaller sizes too. Believe me, they do exactly what the advertising blurb says they'll do.

I have a 55l Waeco and 80l National Luna. Both are fridge freezers. The Waeco lives in the car and the NL is in the garage full of ice, beer and wine. I bought it for a camper van project that is still to get off the ground. I think the Waeco is a perfect size and draws very little off the split charge.

I've got one of these 3 way fridges for when we take the tent, or it sits in the awning cooling drinks when we take the tin tent. Think it's the Dometic one.

https://www.camping-online.co.uk/camping-f...y-fridges.

Handy at home too for parties etc for drinks out in the garden.

Not fantastically cold, fine for drinks, and ok if you chuck some frozen stuff in amongst the fresh, certainly for a weekend trip.

Cheers

I have just ordered a Coleman Cooler 50QT Wheeled Xtreme - Looking forward to how it works in the back of the D4 for some camping weekends.

Quick question to the knowledgeable people on here - I will fill the cooler with ice and the items I want to keep cold, but is it best to keep draining the water as the ice melts, or just let everything swim in the water?

Hi fade2grey.
This is what have, and it’s brilliant takes up a bit of space, but is three way. Gas canister, 12v or 240. It works brilliantly, and keeps beers cold.

It’s not the cheapest but does come in handy if you’re having a party

You won't get any ice melting until at least day 3 if you keep it closed.
I only ever drain the water when heading home and our camping is finished. Wink
Another tip is, freeze some bottles of water before you leave home, 2 litre coke bottles are superb. They not only help keep everything cold but you can also drink the water. Wink

But don’t fill the bottles too full before freezing them!

Good tip with the water bottles, I’ll give that a go!

I plan on opening it up very 15mins or so - it will be full of drink!

Thanks all.. going to brave it with the little Halfords thing we have and see how it fares volume wise, think a compressor one is probably the right answer. Not expecting to be off grid for weeks with anything, more posh camping and cold beer (particularly the last bit)
