Front Air Suspension Bag Only Replacement

Hi all.

One of my front air springs is leaking through the air bag. I see that replacement bags are available without the damper. Has anyone removed the air spring from the damper and fitted a new one?

I would go for the easy option of replacing the whole strut assembly but am overseas and cannot airfreight the damper due to the compressed air contained in it.

Thanks.

This guy takes one apart, so may help you see what's inside before you start. Looks easy enough.
Most seem to replace them as a unit as the Damper will be near it's serviceable life anyway.
Clearly you say that you cannot ship them, so a fix is needed.

Take a few photos and post here when you do it as it may help someone else too..

Are they Oil filled dampers on the Discovery? Always thought that they may well be Gas? (These being the airfreight issue, not the airbags..)

Further..
Just had a search and it seems that they are OIL filled. None of the replacement damper units have a transit tie fitted, which is usually how the gas replacement dampers arrive. The tie is to stop them self extending. Oil units do not self extend (no Gas..)

Seems like you are able to ship one then...

Hi

Hope this may also be useful, also imagine using some silicone grease will make reassembly easier

Job Done

All,
New air spring now installed on the original damper.

The images show the original damper and air spring separated with the old O-rings and washers, which form the air seal at the lower end. A number of components remain inside the air spring part, and can only be retrieved by cutting open the flexible membrane. This means that they would have been assembled on the damper prior to the clamp rings being installed on the air spring membrane during manufacture. This makes the air spring/damper a fabricated unit once assembled, so you cannot change the air spring alone on the OE design.

I found an aftermarket component on eBay entitled 'Land Rover Discovery 3 4 Range Rover Sport Front Air Suspension Spring Bag', which features internal O-Rings and bump stop components. This allows you to use the damper part of the original assembly, as the new air spring just slides over it.

Just back from giving it a test thrashing in the desert and it seems to be working well. Feeling chuffed, as the local LR dealer wanted ruinous amounts of money for the OE air spring/damper assemblies, not least because both sides would have had to have been done, as you cannot just change one damper. Using the aftermarket design cost £68 instead, which should keep me in credit with the missus for a while.

Thanks again for your input on this.
