Front Diff

Hi

I had started to notice an osculating low pitch whine from the front of the car at speeds over 60 a couple of months ago (while still under approved warranty), due to house move and me working away and not using the car much I did nothing until my wife started to notice it and we took it to Roger Young in Saltash to see if it was a wheel bearing.
Unfortunately, the diff was diagnosed (black oil and fragments in the casing) and a bill of nearly £800 was on the cards.
The service manager then called and suggested waiting and seeing. He said the oil change may help and it may not get any worse and a catastrophic failure was unlikely. So, reluctant to fork out £800 i agreed.
What are the options if it gets worse, is there a cheaper solution, an indie in the East Cornwall, West Devon area perhaps? recon, bearing replacement? anything really. If only I had mentioned it when it had a service inside the warranty period.

Ta

Paul

£800 to replace is not too bad. The service exchange unit is about £480 ISTR plus a new oil seal and a couple of new diff/driveshaft clips.
I did mine on the driveway, would normally take about 6 hours I would say if I had everything to hand. It's actually not too difficult, although easier if you have a willing assistant to help jack the new one in place!

noise. was that or the wheel bearing (also changed) and I had a trip to Europe so as I'm keeping the car for some time, I figured I'd just do it as a precaution before the trip. Thumbs Up

Unfortunately my Indie told me there are no longer any of the service exchange units around...its new units only, and they are a new part number too..... (Nick-TLO confirmed that)
costs are as follows (March this year inc VAT)
front diff £623.30
breather hose £10.17
seal £0.98
diff oil £35.46
3.4 hours labour £168.30

grand total £999.49

hope the oil change works ! Shocked

Actually just remembered ,Nick could do the diff cheaper, but carting it up here from Yeovil would have wiped out any saving ...

Seems the quote I had was actually pretty good. I must say the service so far from Roger Young in Saltash has been pretty good, mind you after Stratstones Slough anything seems good.

actually, just checked and I paid around £380 for a service exchange front diff at the beginning of April.

ISTR Courier was £40 to get it and some other bits delivered.

The diff for the D3 is the same diff for the D4 (Just make sure you get the same ratio, for Auto it is 3.54 and on a sticker on the box)
