Hi, we drove back from Scotland to Yorkshire last weekend and had the same whining noise. To cut a long story short we ended up ringing LR Assistance and coming home in a truck with the Discovery on a flat bed trailer. It went into the garage where we were told the front differential had packed up. The transmission fluid was flushed out; bits of metal came out with it, confirming that the diff was damaged. The car's only done 41,000 miles from new & is now 5 months out of warranty. Aaaggghhhhhhhh! To make matters worse, LR cannot get a replacement part until 26th November 2008, which is a total of 4 weeks. We've spoken to LR Customer Care who have chased the part. Aparently Caterpillar make the front diff and they can't get one from them either. Has anyone else had this problem? And if so, how did you manage to speed up the process??? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Caterpillar don't make the front differential, they manage the parts distribution
you could ask for a 'line pinch' or a 'pack pinch' otherwise, enjoy your replacement vehicle!

Hi, Unfortunately we only took out LR Assistance and not Extended Warranty. So we no longer have a family car, with 3 children & a dog. Not a great position to be in. Already asked for a 'line pinch' but told it's not possible. Any further advice would be greatly appreciated!

You might want to pm forum member 'thelargeone' If nothing else, he will be able to confirm if your dealer is telling you the truth or not. He is a parts manager at a LR dealer who does seem to be able to work miracles most of the time

Hi Gareth,
Thank you very much for the advice. I'm prepared to do almost anything to get the situation resolved.

It doesn't help your situation, but the date for the diff. arriving sounds about right, from what my dealer said.
Fortunately, my dealer had one on order for a job that they were doing later this month. So they used that one for my D3.
Does LRA not cover you for a courtesy vehicle?

Thank you very much - your help is really appreciated as we're struggling without a family car. Waiting a month is a nightmare. We have 3 boys aged 8, 7 & 1 and a dog. The Discovery is an absolute work horse for us and an integral part of our family life; so being without it is no fun at all!
p.s. LR Assistance only provide a car for 2 days! which isn't much help given that we're having to wait 26. But thanks for the suggestion.

LR assist provide the first 48 hours, the dealer picks up the tab for further days until repaired unless it's a parts supply issue, in which case LR pay - have you tried contacting LRCS?

Yes, I've spent a lot of time talking to LRCS but they say they can't provide a replacement vehicle as our Discovery is out of warranty. It ran out in February '08 but given the economic situation we chose not to extend it. Hindsight is a great thing isn't it! This is our 2nd disco and we've had a new engine, a new transfer box, a new compressor for the air suspension and now this. Oh dear! The problem is, we love the Disco - when it's working!!!!!

Mine had a leaking rear diff at 72,000 miles took it into dealer and they replaced the complete diff foc was out of warranty as well. I was quoted something like £800 initialty to have it repaired by them. I never did find out why the dealer decided to replace it rather than fix the leak. It had not been noisy or anything.

I have had my front diff replaced a few months ago.
My D3 comes out of warranty in 2,000 kms (or 2 months), and if there is systemic problem with older diffs (MY06) do I need to get my rear e-diff checked and/or changed? 06 TDV6 SE with many LR and after-market extras. Used only on weekends and trips out west.
