front diff or wheel bearing

We have just had our d3 checked at landrover for a wereing noise. They have come back saying it could be a noisy front diff or wheel bearing. How can we tell .the noise is getting louder now. Should i panic or not. We were thinking of changing the diff oil. Can you tell us what grage and how much. Thanks in advance.

I had a similar situation.

Quick check is to go to somewhere with a quiet car park or similar and drive in a set of left hand and right hand circles.

If the noise goes away during one set of circles then the wheel bearing on the opposite site is shot.

When I first heard it I was convinced my diff was going but it was the right wheel bearing.

Thanks for the reply. Just one thing i forgot is that if you take your foot off the gas the noise decreases. Was this the same with yours. Thanks

I had my front diff changed. The symptoms I had was a droning noise which was very evident going downhill, turning in circles didn't change the noise level. Thank God for warranties!!!!

Mine was was a little quieter at slower road speeds as you'd reasonably expect.

I did find the noise got louder in a short space of time so I wouldn't ignore it and hope things improve on their own.

Try the circle test - if that doesn't make a difference then break out the warranty.

If it's under warranty just tell them to fix it!! Main dealer would identify a worn bearing in their sleep, if that doesn't fix it they can do the diff then.
