Front Drivetrain Vibration and Noise

Had an interesting problem come up with our new D3 with just over 500 miles on the clock.

The car has developed a very loud graunching noise with vibration from, I think, the OSF part of the drivetrain.

When coasting in neutral or driving under light revs, there is no noise. If I accelerate hard or turn so as to load the OSF wheel, then I get what can only be described as a loud graunching sound. It is like two parts are rubbing heavily, or even gears are slipping across mesh. There is also heavy vibration through the steering wheel. The noise initially sounded like a stone caught between the pads and discs, but got much worse. It seems rotational in nature and rises in frequency /volume as speed increases.

We have checked under the car and there are no visible signs of damage or rubbing. There are no warning lights or similar.

The LRA guy has been out and he says it is a new one on him, so the car is being recovered to the stealer on Monday first thing for their love and attention.

I suspect either a UJ or perhaps the diff, since the noise seems to be generated under changing drivetrain / steering geometries (i.e. acceleration and cornering but not straight line low load). However, with only 500 miles on the clock and no "fun and games" then I find it hard to believe this should occur in this day and age of quality control - but then you never know!

By way of further background, I had the car in the fields the previous day, running across dry rutted grass at low speeds. I raised the suspension to off road height, engaged mud and ruts to try it and then took it out of the program back to normal but used off road height on and off all day. I did not notice any noise or vibration when we were in the field or indeed throughout the 100 mile drive home.

Any thoughts or similar experiences would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

Its possibly this:

The other thought I have is that its the DSC, have you got a flat tyre? if the DSC operates it vibrates, and flashes a yellow symbol on the dash board.

The LRA guy should have spotted these though.

I will go and double check, but some of the symptoms don't seem to match - no light on the dash board, no loss of speed and no appearance of cadence / intermittent braking. That said...

Cheers

Andy

Well, news form the dealer is good, in that the noise was supposedly caused by a loose nut holding the front diff in place.

Yet to test the car myself, but assuming this is all sorted, I am a little worried that a car this young is already getting loose nuts Whistle
