Yes, thanks very much to everyone for your help (especially Wiggs who has confirmed that I have halogen lights). I must have been seeing things when I thought they were working (mind you I had been driving for 8 hours when I checked).
Going to have to start saving for an HSE next time to avoid such confusion !
