Front Wheel Bearing

Hi Guys.

My front nearside wheel bearing has got slight play in it...about 2-3mm at the tyre edge. So looks like I will need to replace this...is there a how to guide anywhere about (with diagrams/photos) that could help me to do this job myself? Stealers have quoted me £700!!!

I am a fairly good DIY mechanic and I feel this should be a job I can tackle myself. Is there anything that I should be worried about in terms of special tools like a huge press for example?

Also where should I get the replacement bearing (or other essential) parts from? And roughly how much will a new bearing cost me?

By the way, my D3 has only covered 48,000 miles all gently on tar-mac - absolutely no off-roading!! Seems like a very low mileage to have to perform such a task I would say.... I also have an old Omega which has done over 100,000 miles and the wheel bearings are still perfect. Is this yet another Disco 3 weakness?

Many thanks.

MG.

Your Omega didn't carry 2.7ton on it's shoulders........

Easy enough to do TBH, have a quick search for Bearing or Driveshaft or someone will come along with the link for you... Thumbs Up

The link has the old driveshaft nut torque (350Nm), the correct value is now 230Nm.

Hi Gareth

Very many thanks this is just what I need. You have made it look straight forward with very clear pictures.

I will need a 32mm spanner/socket and a 350Nm torque wrench...my torque wrench only goes up to 200Nm.

Is it better to get the replacement HUB from LR main dealer? What would you advise? I have seen some on ebay....

Again thank-you!

cheers,

MG

My front drivers side went a couple of weeks back, £120 + vat for complete hub assembly from LR and £100 for local indie to fit. At £700 I presume your stealer was wearing a mask and riding a horse!!

As I said, the correct torque is 230Nm - bringing it back towards a more typical and cheaper DIY torque wrench. The upper torque for the job is 275Nm.

Off Topic No I was in stealth mode........in my little VW Caddy heading over to Leeds. Not sure what the normal routine is with shot front bearings but I dont reckon its pulling 80 mph up hill, but then again I maybe wrong as I couldnt hear them wining Thumbs Up

Just done both mine.. you will need a good 32m socket & breaker bar to get driveshaft nut off.
LR oem are Timken bearings, but beware as some come with a new nut some don't so just make sure you check.

I got one Timken & one genuine LR from from Nick (aka The Large One)...needless to say they were identical !! Getting the old one off can be a right Censored . Mine were both well rusted in ..lump hammer and cold chisel used to 'turn' them back & forth until they were loose enough to get out .....

Enjoy.. not a very hard job.. but fair amount of brute force needed Thumbs Up
 Cheers Ian
