Front Wheel Bearing
Hi Guys.
My front nearside wheel bearing has got slight play in it...about 2-3mm at the tyre edge. So looks like I will need to replace this...is there a how to guide anywhere about (with diagrams/photos) that could help me to do this job myself? Stealers have quoted me £700!!!
I am a fairly good DIY mechanic and I feel this should be a job I can tackle myself. Is there anything that I should be worried about in terms of special tools like a huge press for example?
Also where should I get the replacement bearing (or other essential) parts from? And roughly how much will a new bearing cost me?
By the way, my D3 has only covered 48,000 miles all gently on tar-mac - absolutely no off-roading!! Seems like a very low mileage to have to perform such a task I would say.... I also have an old Omega which has done over 100,000 miles and the wheel bearings are still perfect. Is this yet another Disco 3 weakness?
Many thanks.

bearing is abouit £100.
Your Omega didn't carry 2.7ton on it's shoulders........
Easy enough to do TBH, have a quick search for Bearing or Driveshaft or someone will come along with the link for you... Bodsys Brake Bible

Hi Gareth
Very many thanks this is just what I need. You have made it look straight forward with very clear pictures.
I will need a 32mm spanner/socket and a 350Nm torque wrench...my torque wrench only goes up to 200Nm.
Is it better to get the replacement HUB from LR main dealer? What would you advise? I have seen some on ebay....
Again thank-you!
cheers,

My front drivers side went a couple of weeks back, £120 + vat for complete hub assembly from LR and £100 for local indie to fit. At £700 I presume your stealer was wearing a mask and riding a horse!!

Ent - where were you ? ???? ( obviously west of Ilkley near Skipton ) were you in the Landmark ?
Why? do I have to drive slowly with dodgy bearings ?

As I said, the correct torque is 230Nm - bringing it back towards a more typical and cheaper DIY torque wrench. The upper torque for the job is 275Nm.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Just done both mine.. you will need a good 32m socket & breaker bar to get driveshaft nut off.
LR oem are Timken bearings, but beware as some come with a new nut some don't so just make sure you check.
I got one Timken & one genuine LR from from Nick (aka The Large One)...needless to say they were identical !! Getting the old one off can be a right . Mine were both well rusted in ..lump hammer and cold chisel used to 'turn' them back & forth until they were loose enough to get out .....
Enjoy.. not a very hard job.. but fair amount of brute force needed Cheers Ian
