Frontrunner Windcheetah question

I am in the process of getting a Frontrunner Windcheetah Slimline roofrack. I have read the applicable threads here, but I need an opinion on the choice of roof rails. My D3 has the LR roof rails installed, but I read that the FR rails are actually better/stronger. My question is: is the difference so significant that it is worth splashing out the money (about 400 euros Shocked) for the FR rails? I will probably never fit a rooftent to it, just one or two spare wheels and some gear.

And the "full length" version for the D3 is 2.2m, right? And it will fit over the PTI shark fin?

Any other things I need to check, be aware of?

Beaker,
IMHO, if you have rails already and you're not going to tax the weight limit, then don't bother with the FR ones.
The full length rack also misses the fin - there are a couple of shots in my gallery showing clearance.

Thanks both, very helpful pictures Thumbs Up I think I'll still go for the full length rack.
I just like a big rack Laughing

Do you know if the FR rails will add to the total height of the car plus rack? I understand that the FR rails are fixed on the gutters, where the LR rails are sunken. I have to use parking garages frequently, so I need to keep the wole thing reasonably low. How high are your D3's with the rack on (either normal or access height)?

BTW dflo, is it 'rare' because of the chicken?

No, it's not a standard size ... Some would call it bespoke, some a happy accident... Wink

I'm afraid I can't help on the height question, as my rack now graces Chris Tyler's D3, but I'd estimate that it added no more than 4" to the height.

Chris also swapped his LR rails for the FR rails, and I would say that despite the gutter removal, the LR rails are higher overall than the FR ones, due to the upstands on the LR version. Don't forget you'll also have to budget for another set of gutter strips if you get the FR rails to save a few mil.

Hey Chris mate! Thanks for the info. I'm starting to build my own clone of your D3 Whistle No winch or compressor planned yet though... Laughing

Roof height is 192 cm in normal mode and 187 in access mode?
So that would make it 199 cm with the rack in access mode... Did you ever encounter problems with parking garages (normally around 2 metres height)?

Or am I mistaken about the height figures... Shark fin antenna is 197 cm in normal height isn't it?

I swapped the LR rails for the FR rails. As far as I could tell, the FR ones are marginally lower than the LR ones.

Hi Beaker.

I would suggest that its worth while using the FR rails. Not least because they a supplied with the roof rack & legs set. I am sure the the difference in height is very small. If you fit yourself however, you'll need to be careful when fitting the rails if you have a glass roof.

If your still looking for a rack. Give me a PM.

Regards
JJ
