Fuel Burning Heater - how can i tell its working ?

If its 4 degrees and the engine is cold - should the FBH fire up when the ignition is on - or only when the main engine is running ?

Cant seem to see any evidence that mine is running

Thanks

Will fire up when you have ignition on ISTR.

You will hear it as a gentle whooshing noise. & when it's really cold, you'll see 'smoke' coming out of the car bonnet.....

the fbh 's own exhaust is situated at the bottom of the NS wheel arch , look for an approx 25mm diam stainless steel sticking down slightly.Reach in and you should feel the gases being expelled.

I didn't even know I had a FBH until I put my hand on the exhaust of it whilst working on something else under the bonnet! I've now got Webasto branded onto my palm Laughing
If you think yours isn't working, try unplugging it and leave for a few minutes. This clears the memory of any previous failed starts, and may do the trick. Also ISTR there has to be enough fuel in the tank (above a certain level) and battery charge for it to come on.

Thanks folks - its definitely not coming on. I've switched on the ignition and theres no noise or exhaust from the unit. It took the standard 3 or 4 miles this morning for the car to warm up.

IIRC these type of heaters Eberspacher, Webasto and the like draw a hefty starting current - is it possible with lack of use that its just blown a fuse ? Does anyone know if the unit has its own fuse or is it fused only through the car electrics and where the car fuse for this would be?

Cars an 07 SE btw

Thanks

Engine has to be running, not just the ignition on as far as I know. As mentioned above after three attempts to start, if it fails it will lock out. Remove the power plug on the FBH and leave it a few minutes and then plug it in again, this clears the lock out.

for those of you with the timer and haveing problems firing up the FBH i found these instructions in a websto manual for resetting the errors to 0 and it worked for me

instructions for resetting the FBH are as follows

press the flame symbol on the timer, wait 3 seconds and pull the 20a fuse, wait 3 secs reinsert the fuse and then press the flame button again wait 3 seconds and pull the fuse again, wait 3 seconds and re insert the fuse the FBH should then fire up as soon as the fuse connects

what i found was that you needed to do this a couple of times and press the button to fire it up and all was well

Edit.... the fuse is under the bonnet in the battery box and i think it is number 28

Sterling. was the temperature actually 4 degrees. In the past mine hasnt always come on when the dash says 4 degrees. sometimes its been a little colder 2 or 3 degrees and some times higher Confused .

I'm not sure what sensor it uses.

You could allways fit a remote / text system to it. that way you can stay in bed a little longer and send a text message. When you start the car loverly warm are will come out the engine will be nearly up to temp Thumbs Up

Cant see that theres much point in having to have the engine running for the FBH to run as most of the wear on the engine will occur during the cold start up. I thought the purpose of the FBH was to reduce the warm up time to reduce wear and speed up the time that the cabin/windows will heat up.

Re sensors - if the FBH runs at different temperatures on the dash - then it must have its own sensor. Will disconnect the plug and try again as suggested.

Will the FBH failure to start be recorded in the Engine management log for the dealer to see ?

You need the timer if you want it to run without the engine running. It's not there to reduce wear, it is purely there to provide cabin heat in cold climates as the engines do not produce much residual heat.

They can read FBH fault codes.

Pretty cold here yesterday morning, the car showed 4degs, but it never came on. It usually has to see an indicated 2degs on my display before it runs.

Not had the sweet smell of burning diesel so far, but it will come.

I would say it's just not cold enough yet. Thumbs Up

Hell, what time are you getting up in the morning? I've seen -1 several times this last couple of weeks. Was +1 this morning.
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
