Fuel Consumption

Hi every one,
Do any of you keep a record of their deisel fuel consumption. I seem to average about 12.6 to 13 litres/100km around the city and open road (in combination). Off road it is variable depending on conditions but can be up to 20 litres/ 100kms. I am sure when I first got the vehicle I was getting better figures than this.
Maybe it is just all the hills in Hobart!
A related question is that in June I am driving a loop from Alice Springs, Halls Creek, Canning Stock Route to Wiluna and back to Alice. What sort of fuel consumption should I expect on such a trip.
Thanks in advance for any answers Very Happy

DISCO444, I have been keeping a record of fuel consumption since purchasing my TDV6 on Jan 30 2006. Latest figures in table below.

(Please don't gloat about the low fuel prices to our overseas cousins.) Rolling with laughter

By comparison with your hills, Brisbane is pretty flat where I drive (mixture of city and highway). For the trip that you have planned, I would imagine that you should achieve around 11-12 litres per 100 km (depending on loading of D3 and the speeds you choose to travel at). And with your long range fuel tank, that should equate to about 1500 km between refuelling stops.

Last year I drove to Cooktown from Brisbane (and return) and achieved some very low consumption figures but the vehicle was lightly loaded and 2 persons only on board. My travelling speeds were close to the posted speed limits for the roads I drove on.

The best I have had done at Christmas (extra demerit points, so no lead foot) was 8.8 litres/100km for 600 km but driving around in the country, mostly at 90-110kmh is 11 litres/per 100km. I even got 15l/100km towing a 2.5 tonne boat!
I think that they are excellent as in weight per fuel consumption.

Hey Leigh,
Looks like you've got a fancy spreadsheet setup there. I've got a basic excel sheet but haven't got advanced features on it, any chance you can e-mail it over to me (copyrights protected & all that... Smile )

Cheers

DISCO444 - My fuel consumption in metropolitan Sydney in off-peak hour is around 12.3 to 12.8l/100km (depending on traffic conditions). On the motorway/ freeway I was getting arpomd 9.8 to 10.4l/100kml at 100km/hr. I think your fuel consumption figures are not unusual.

I also keep a record of what MPG the trip computer is reading. I generally find that the trip is 3-4MPG more optimistic than the actual consumption. Anybody else find that..?

Mine is a MY07 XS (UK spec) so wonder if the software version makes any difference.

cheers

Disco444,
These are some of my figures so far

St Marys to Devonport, averaged 8.2 lt/100 km, (Mostly flat driving, 100-110 speed zones, Air con on)
Devonport-Scottsdale the other day 9.2lts/100 km (Some hilly sections, air con on)
around town 10-12 lt/100km.
These figures are from the trip computer.

(MY07 TDV6)
Trust me, what could go wrong?

Thanks to all of you that replied. It seems to me that my figures may be a little high as I am only a 'gentle' driver. I think I will look into the matter a little more (and keep better records).
Cheers

Just did my first fill to fill test in my 2007MY SE. I had been driving quite carefully with the Ave MPG display constantly on. It's amazing how the display encourages you to eek out the extra 0.1MPG!! Anyhow, for a mixed bag of driving, the computer showed 28.3 mpg. I was very comfortable with that. Unfortunately, the fill to fill reading was 23.1!!! I am gutted!! What's even more disappointing is that it's had the TC re-map Shocked . In the big scheme of things, I can live with it as the car is soooooooooooo fantastic but this was a big disappointment. Has anyone addressed this disparity with the dealer? I presume the diesel used relies on a flow meter. Has anyone ever had this replaced?

TDV6 purchased 25Jan06. 48 598 kms @ an average of 11.36 litres per 100 kms (just under 25 mpg). The best achieved was 9.92 and worst 17.82. I don't accelerate hard and have the AC on and cruise @ 100-104 kph (GPS). I average just under 700 kms between refuelling (the light is nearly always on before I refuel). The display is always 1 to 1.5 litres per 100 kms less than actual.
At least it is better than my TD5. Both were/are autos.

Yeah, I've found the trip computer is about 1litre/100km too low.

I've also found that if I cruise between 80-90kph I can get less than 10l/100km with the roof rack and tent on top!

PDES, my first fill resulted in under 20MPG, but since then I've been working around 24 (at the pump) and showing 26 on the computer display.

I'm hoping it's just a short term guage whilst the engine loosens up. But all costs taken into account, it's not such a bad deal. If I'd have been that bothered about the fuel and wanted 40MPG, I'd have boiught an Audi A3 deisel!
