I used to do always about 20.5 mpg with my 19' Wrabgler MTR's and now that I switched to 19' Pirelli ATR's I can only do about 18.5 mpg. Since I did not think the tires could be the reason for the consumption increase, I asked my dealer to look at the problem. The only faulty code he found was about the fuel debimeter which was then replaced by a new one. Unfortunately this did not solve the problem. I also disabled the auxiliary heater thinking it might run too long and therfore burn fuel, but again no change. I even poured some cleaning product into my fuel tank thinking the engine might need a cleaning but no result either.
Anybody has an idea where I should look? Could the tires be the reason for the increased burn? Would you say 18.5mpg is a normal fuel consumption for a 2005 manual D3 with an expediton gallery, 4 roof headlights, a RAI and having 200000KM, knowing I am always driving smoothly on national roads or highways (never city)?
when/what was your last service and was the air filter replaced ??
the serv shedule for airfilter is 45K(miles) but have found that in dusty climates this can choke the filter enough to decrease fuel consumption
also had instances of rear brakes binding enough to make the engine work harder than normalTLO has left the building.......
I no longer work for a Landrover Dealer

Actually I had my last service about 3000km ago and yes the airfilter was replaced. Afterwards I indeed found that I had gotten some power back but no change in the fuel consumption. The brakes were also checked but no findings! It is during this check that the fuel debimeter has been replaced.

Do you still have the MTRs?? Might be worth putting them back on for a month & see if improves.
The dealer first thought about this but said it should then smoke and I should hear a blowing noise when accelerating which is not the case. Also, I do not really think I lost power, it is only about fuel consumption.

I do not have the MTR's anymore but the dealer is kind enough to lent me a set of wheels with original tires. I should try this soon for a few weeks. But still shouldn't I normally burn less with the more road type tires like the ATR's than with mud type tires like the MTR's? I thought from what I read in this forum that the ATR's were the best tires around!

I also find fuel use increases when it gets colder, could be that but I'd expect mpg to be at least 2+ up even when colder. Run ATRs on SWMBO's D3 for 2000 miles last winter and consumption didn't drop, but conditions were a bit unusual with lots of snow driving.
PS thinking about it, could be another problem like air filter or binding brakes that just happens to have started at the same time. I've given up trying to explain the behaviour of D3s but coincidences do happen. Check wheels aren't warmer than normal after a run to rule out brakes binding, check CAREFULLY!
Perhaps the FBH has decided it is time to work and is guzzling fuel?A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.
Thing in right hand front corner when looking under bonnet. It's job is to heat engine up and keep it warm in cold weather. Uses diesel from fuel tank. There are lots of threads on forum about their problems.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. Ok I see. It is what I called "auxiliary heater" in my first post. I actually pulled out it's circuit breaker trying to troubleshoot so I gess it should not drink diesel anymore. am I right?
