Put an add in the local paper asking if anybody else has issues with fuel being brough around the same time or similar area. Also contact other fealerships in the area and see if they have had similar issues with other cars. You may find there are several more out there with the same problems. I have a fuel problem from the 15th Dec 08 with rough running, loss of power with intermittent power restoration , difficult starting, smoking on start and low fuel consumption.
Always fill the car up at home at M supermaret and travel from there. Left it over Xmas until I had the chance to strip out the fuel system, new fuel filter, took a fuel sample but did not dismantle engine side pipework/injectors yet.
Renewed fuel with BP Ult and arranging to flush thro too. Running fine at moment but shall now when my mileage picks up next week.
During maintenance, repairs and servicing, soot levels in the EGR were high with unburnt carbon.
Used the same fuel M station for four years with only occasional odd running but not this bad - could be a coincidence with another fault BUT my wifes diesel car ran very rough on the same fuel and station from the same refill time (Merc 170D) and this is more tolerant on fuel quality. She has changed to fuel locally and it has been running smoother?
Any suggestions who can analyse the sample because I still have more remedial work to do and want to avoid a repeat ? pete57

interesting about the supermarket "M", I thought it was just me, was on a trip to Scotland, filled up from reserve at a M forecourt, got just on to the M8 no matter than about 2 miles away, heavy stop start traffic on a friday pm, got on to the M74, loss of power at lower end, little pick up until 35mph or more, got to final desitination some 350 miles later after topping up with Esso as soon as possible, erg failure.
2 days off the road, enterprise could get me a disco 3 with towbar, had to hire one in myself at cost of 140 per day (only 100 mile limit on miles per day)
