^^^
whichis exactly the same as happened with diesel all those years ago.... incentives, cheap VED etc. Therefore IMO the same is going to happen with Electric cars, there are already the incentives and the cheap VED but once they become more common than diesels or petrols then the prices of charging, and the jealousy tax (such as the 40k+ extra VED on new cars currently) will be hiked again.
Its the roller coaster of car ownership i guess

1/2p more to be carbon neutral? how does that work then?

If you fill up with Shell the "energy" used is offset against carbon neutral implementation. This is independently certified. However this costs Shell so going forward they need a shared contribution to remain in the scheme. Hence the 0.5p which is nowt.

Can only find the business scheme but this is also an option for private users.

One of the reasons why they keep pushing smart meters so they can start variable pricing

Variable pricing already exists.

I paid 128.9 at Tesco yesterday, that's up 2p since last week.

As for emission levels, I run a commercial vehicle workshop for a worldwide distribution company and have been in the trade for over 20 years. The latest Euro 6 levels are gained by using SCR (adblue) and EGR together. We cannot get a reading out of the MOT for emissions as they are too clean for the machine to detect anything.
The exhaust box on our trucks retail at around £10,000 to £12,000 with the DPF requiring changing every 4th oil change at the cost of £900. They are like chemical plants with 2 catalyists, a DPF and more sensors than you think are there. It is certainly a massive difference from when I was an apprentice and on a cold start up there was so much black smoke you didn't want to be anywhere near the things.
We don't pay anywhere near forecourt prices as we buy at 36,000 litres a time and have a national account. However, imagine how much the treasury make out of the transport industry. We get an average of 12mpg from a truck. The tank on a unit hold about 400 litres of diesel. Plus the VED which is £560 per year per truck. So if we pay £1 per litre, a driver tops up with 300 litres that's £180 to the treasury (at 60% tax paid at the pump). Per day per truck. And on the site where I work we have a mixture of vans, and small to large trucks that total 65 vehicles. So over a year our largest trucks would pay just over £47,000 in fuel duty and VED. Each. Makes my Disco look rather frugal in comparison.

Nice @ 12mpg.

Old man use to be an OO running an DAF2800 in the 80s. 6 to 7mpg @ 38 tonnes. VED back then on a 2 axle tractor unit was circa > £3000 PA

They are improving as that is what the demand is now, more mpg and less emissions, less running costs and less down time. The VED is now based on what type and how many axles you run as well. We have 3 axle units and trailers all on air suspension which helps.
Mind you the cost of fuel now probably offsets the drop in VED!

I wonder how long it will be before someone admits the corrosive elements a fully regulated adblue exhaust system produces.

It might not be particles, but I wouldn't want a child of mine in a pushchair breathing in these 'clean' emissions.

You could buy it direct from the well Nige, but it might be a bit thick! More filter changes?

If you had a petrol car, you might be able to get some drip-gas from them - might reduce the life of the engine slightly (a lot!)

I do happen to know where the Forties pipeline runs from where it comes ashore at Cruden Bay but they do tend to get rather upset if you try to do a hot-tap on the main UK pipeline Laughing

Lots of other options will be up and running in this area soon including hydrogen but I can't see Tesco's offering that just yet Rolling with laughter

It doesn't on a 15 or 30 minute instantaneous profile relative to grid load which is where they want to go with load shedding and selective power cuts if demand is too high. The SMETS specification document makes interesting reading

Ooh, interesting read. I didn't realise that Coleman fuel (for camping stoves) started out as white gas aka drip gas.
