Fuel range remaining

At 30 to the gallon, these things should have a range of about 570 miles.

Driving along the other day (not in a hurry!) I managed to get it to show 645 miles range remaining - having covered 75 miles since filling it!
(computer said 35.1mpg Very Happy )

Any advances on a total range of 720 miles??

F me! I'm lucky if I can get 330 miles out of a tank. car does seem to spend its life trundling around London though.

Averaging 18 mpg, any other city dwellers getting the same?

Guys

I've now done 3000 miles, and no matter how gentle I try (56mph on the M40! dont try this at home), I cant get over 29 on the message display. Usually, 25 seems about the norm. 18 around town on a cold morning.

How do you get into the 30's

Update... Now nearing the end of the same tank of fuel, 565 on the trip meter, 30 miles (fluctuates wildly) remaining.

That figure was achieved by driving on empty A roads at about 45 - 55 mph and making the most of every downhill (freewheeling 2.7t is not recommended but does wonders for for avoiding consumption Smile )

The route was straight across the top of Dartmoor, taking the scenic route to work.

The first 75 miles was followed by 10 miles of intermittent off road, up and down some severe slopes on a muddy cross country pipeline route, which saw the range remaining drop by about 150 miles!

I'm now playing "fuel light roulette" trying to see if you really can get 600m out of a tankfull.

Place your bets now!

So its you that I keep passing on the M40 then Wink I usually cruise at around 75 with revs around the 3K mark. When its not in the winter (FBH really reduces your MPG) I can average around 30 easy.

I think your probably labouring the engine a tad if your in 6th at that speed. Try 5th gear and use the revs as an indicator of when to change up.

If it was yesterday morning, it was probably me you passed. I got Censored off with this, and did travel rather quicker on the way back.

So is no one else getting 18 mpg average in a TDV6. Anyone stuck in the teeming metropolis that can soothe my paranoia or should I see the dealer.

London MPG...

Well not London exactly, but after the Mrs driving the D3 around High Wycombe for a week (yes, that includes the school run), she scored 21 mpg, so not a lot more than you. After the weekend's 1.5 hour runs into the countryside I'm reading 23-24 (on top of her average, not reset), so I'm assuming I was getting 28-30 (in isolation).

Just filled up for the 2nd time (£80). Holy crap batman. That had better last more than the 8 days my 1st fill-up lasted.

I'm thinking of inserting a brick under the go-pedal Monday thru Friday Very Happy

Same story with me, the wife used the D3 for the first 6 months we had it, for a short run to work, shopping etc and 18 to 20 mpg was about the best she achieved Shocked

So we got the wife a diesel mk5 Golf DSG which now gives her about 40 mpg Smile and I now use the D3 to and from work and for work and can achieve about 25 mph more on a long run.

You are not alone in your paranoia. With what is mostly city driving I have been getting 18.5 mpg thorugh winter (auto box). On a blast to Birmingham last weekend ( 4 hours from Edinburgh to NEC) and return ( 4h 20mins) averaged 25.4mpg, the counter was reset before leaving. I am slightly disappointed as my previous landcruser retuned about 4-5 mph better but of course is only half the car!!. Personally I think the best way to cure the problem is to switch the counter off.

Unless someone out there thinks these figures are exceptionally low and thinks we should investigate further.

Thanks folks, feel much better now. I shouldn't be surprised as my BMW 323 has faithfully returned an average of 17 mpg over 7 years of ownership, once again mainly city driving.

I never seem to get the figures quoted by the manufacturers, must be my heavy right foot Very Happy

I chickened out at 595 miles with 0 miles range remaining (for the last 5 miles) and filled up with 84.71 litres of Tescos finest diesel. Would that last 0.29 litres in the tank have got me another 5 miles??

With a little determination, 600 miles would be reasonably easily achieved. But it won't be by me!
