Is it just me? When I first got my D4 it would pop up with a message at around 40 - 45 miles telling me I was running low on fuel. More recently it has changed to 10-15 miles if at all. Had a very scary 5 miles on the M5 recently when the distance to empty was at zero caused I paid no attention to the fact SWMBO had borrowed the car and left it empty..

Was discussed on here earlier.
When the warning light comes on, how many litres to fill up?
Most recon there is still about 10-12 litres left when the warning light comes on, regardless of how many miles it says is left.

Thanks for that I did find that topic in my search, my issue is that my light might not come on until it thinks I only have 12 - 15 miles left, when originally it used to come on around the 40 - 45 miles left. Considering I have averaged 28.9 MPG over the last 10,000 miles you'd think it might have a better idea of when it should be warning. I am worried that 12 -15 miles is only around half a gallon and don't want to run out because I've failed to notice it was running short...

The miles remaining estimating seems a complete red herring.
When you next get to the fuel light coming on, go and fill up. You should find you can get about 70-72 litres into the tank. If it is much more, then you do have an issue with the tank senders I suspect.
I am beginning to wonder if the miles remaining to empty is actually programmed to conincide with the cluster guage moving into the grey area below the zero mark, or other words that the miles remaining is until the guage is at zero.
I ignore the miles remaining, wait for the light and then know that I have about 50 miles left to go. The light too has a habit of coming on and then going off again, but it does reach a point of permanence. My D3s both did this too, but getting to grips with the D4 guage and warnings is certainly taking a time!

Thanks Winger, Fuel warning light came on at lunch time today, 15 miles to go, so drove the the petrol station (3 miles away) put 73 litres in so I assume thats is somewhere near what it should be.
Can't say I'd want to push it another 47 miles though...

I have a slightly different problem where i do not get a warning of low fuel. Anyone know why this is?
(hope you dont mind me asking on this very old thread but thought its better than to start a new one)

I've had this sort of problem (funnies when fuel gets low) since mine was new (MY14).
Warning light may or may not come on. Trip recorder says ~50 miles left then the next morning tells me it's empty. Gauge may or may not follow suit.
Had it in for dealer to look at and they replaced the sender unit - which made no difference.
Filling up when it's telling me zero left, I've never been able to get more than about 65 l in - from which I assume it's a false alarm and the previous night's '50 milers left' is correct.
I'll have them look at it again at the next service, but TBH I've never run out and it's not enough of a hassle to force a special trip to the dealer ...

Yes I usually fill up before the low fuel warning but tested it this past week as the aux tank had 80 ltrs in it so took a chance. Got down to 37km range and the warning came up. Seems I was just not letting it get low enough.
