Full steering lock problem |
|
Wife just reported a "juddering" as she reversed in the drive.
Went out to investigate and on full lock "either way" she is indeed correct.
Most obvious explanation is a tyre rubbing but cant see anything obvious and it feels more of a substantial rubbing than a wheel arch.......
Any suggestions ? "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Grease the Steering Bump Stops, on full lock and especially reversing on lock you'll get a grinding screeching sound.
Check this thread out and the pics will show the place to slap a little grease on.

No probs, I've been there too. Its one of those noises you just hear £££££££'s needing to be spent. At least for once its possibly a cheap fix.

Ok,quick update....
I have cleaned and copper-greased all 4 bump stops and it has made no difference.
I have tried pulling out of the drive using full lock , in all suspension settings, and it is at its worst in low range rock crawl mode.It almost feels like a car without a front diff....could the juddering be the tyre slipping as the diff is not working correctly ? "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

latest update........its the front diff !
Currently sitting in a garage waiting for the warranty assessor to look it on Tuesday and decide if it is a "sudden mechanical failure" or wear and tear......even though there are bits of metal all through the diff oil and its knackered, all bets off on which way he will see it "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Humble pie time ....warranty company have agreed it is "sudden mechanical failure" and are going to pay up .....was told no service exchange units around (confirmed by TLO) so its a new unit......which is best part of £600.....TLO tried to help but according to him the unit weighs 51kg so getting it up to Jockland by motorcycle courier was unfortunately a non-starter.......
Nick was very helpful though and just a shame I couldnt pass some business his way..... "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Momentum ...offices in Perth and Newcastle.Spoke to a couple of their employees today, very helpful/polite/patient etc........after being a bit rude and pessimistic about my chances I have to take it all back.......the glass is now half full again..... Car back.....drives like a dream .....the whine and vibration when lifting off the loud pedal on the motorway have disappeared,as has the full lock juddering at low speeds.
Well done Momentum warranties, and Andy White of Whites auto services,Edinburgh (was it Gordons or Bombay Sapphire ? ) for coming up with the goods,I now have the car I should have had all along......a jacked-up Rolls Royce
Thanks also to Nick (TLO) for advice and help. "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

For what its worth, the lock stops should be cleaned first, before greasing, otherwise the noise may not go away
O/T slightly, but I wonder how long before warranty companies stop covering D3's? My D3 Build Thread

Indeed....there was a long, nervous wait of about 6 days before the assessor saw it then the work got authorised.I was all lined up for a BIG fight, but to be fair to them they didnt try and squeak out of it or impose any restrictions,so fair play to them.Bet they signed it through gritted teeth though "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...
