Hi dsd,
Have you "double flushed"the transmission? If not, that's the first thing that I would do.
Search on here using +double +flush

My local dealer has quoted me £300 - 400 to drop my gearbox to investigate my noisy release bearing, so that should be a rough ball park figure. Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Hi dsd
Looking at the pictures in your gallery dated 28 July you would appear to have an auto.
If this is the case then the auto gearbox linkage is the prime suspect. The gearbox linkage problem is easy to fix, £10 approx for the parts, although just using copper grease may do the trick.

Unless you have an extended warranty get it double flushed NOW. It may save you a lot of grief when it fails.
Having mine rebuilt under extened warranty. Dirty ATF with metal filings. Probably caused by torque converter failure.
A flush is a lot cheaper than fixing the box, just make sure you use the right spec ATF. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Hi Darrell
Although I also had my gearbox linkage done, I found that the gear lever movement was starting to get stiff again, this was especially noticeable if the the vehicle had not been used for a period. Removing the plastic gear box tray revealed a very rusty gearbox linkage. See "Autobox Gear Lever pivot - How To" in "Maintenance & Mods (D3)" for further details.
So although it may be the cause, I would suggest you remove the gear box tray (can be done with vehicle on the ground) and have a look at the linkage and lubricate it if necessary. Thus eliminating the linkage as a possible cause of the problem.

Hi Darrell,
Take Caver's advice and do the double flush IMMEDIATELY.
If you wait 3 weeks you might have a terminal transmission.
Best Wishes,

Hmm,
Thanks again all,i'm still puzzled by this, got all sorts of things buzzing thru my mind!
1. Is it really a fault or is it my imagination
2. Could it be crap fuel, although i think were like it before fill up
3. Might not be clutch at all
4. Really don't know, symptom simply is i think it has little power low down below 2.5-3k revs,it seems to be taking longer between gear shift and generally doesn't have the oomph it had and i think the engine/gearbox sounds different/strained unless its totally my imagination!!
I dont drive it much so hopefully it can wait till TFC visits!
Monies a bit tight at mo, so don't want to throw money at it if not needed, hopefully TFC can rectify or at least advise.

It is simple to drop the gear box tray and check the linkage (vehicle need not be jacked up). Water from the air conditioning causes it to rust and as I found just because it has been done once (although it may only have been cleaned up) does not mean that it does not need to be done again.
