Gearbox shudder - solved

Hello All

My torque converter was giving me the shudder when changing up - not unexpected as mine has quite a few miles on it. I toyed with the idea of using Dr Tranny addative, but decided to go for a permanent cure and fit a new torque converter. After looking on here I was expecting a rather large bill.
By chance I was talking to a mate I hadn't seen for a while and he put me on to this place.

http://www.batransmissions.com

I have no links to the place, I've been there twice. Once to drop the Disco off and once to pick it up.
They stripped my torque converter out, reconditioned it and put it back in and now the car feels brand new - it really does drive that smoothly.

All for £400 - there may be a bit of mates rates involved as he told me to mention his name, but I don't think it will have been that much.

Worth considering if you're having transmission problems - these guys know their stuff and are very familiar with D3s and RRSs amongst others.

Rob

Interesting and it would be great if you could give us further updates as the milage increases.

Do you know what was replaced in the TC?

I'll report back if anything goes wrong Robbie.
If I don't post anything, it'll mean everything is fine.

I don't know what they replaced, but I was pleased that mine was reconditioned rather than done on an exchange basis. I know some people haven't had good experience with reconditioned TCs, but they've given a guarantee for the work so I'm happy.

Cheers

Rob

They had it for a week - I think they were/are busy and I said there was no rush for it as it's a second car.
Hope that helps

Me neither I just remember g/box guy showing me the one out of my old merc, and it was blue around the very outer edge where it looked like it had been seam welded.

Yes it is welded. I was taken around the workshop at Sussex Autos when mine was done. Great to see traditional engineering still happening. I could have watched for hours.

They spin the TC on a lathe to open it; only takes a couple of mins. As said, all very traditional engineering with big lathes, brass hammers, micrometers and expert hands. A joy to watch.

Update :

Thought I'd put a quick update on as I've done a few miles with it now.

Nearly 1000 miles done now, including towing a twin axle caravan for about 200 miles up some stupidly steep hills, so it's had a proper work out.

I can report everything is fine, in fact much better than fine - drives like new.

Hope that helps

Rob
