Genuine Expedition (G4-style) Roof Rack
I'm looking at getting one of these (hopefully secondhand, looking at the price ). Would be interested to hear the opinions of owners who have one. Or if any member has one for sale.
Thanks

I think they're a nice looking rack. Not to much wind noise. But the plastic wind dam on the front is quite fragile !!!

I will have one to sell shortly. I had a D3 but now have a D4 with full panoramic sunroof so very unfortunately, Expo rack now superfluous to requirements! I have fitted it with a full aluminium chequer-plate floor and it also has about 15 tie down O-rings plus all OEM fixings and the cowls for the two front supports. I will need a bit of splay paint as it blew over in the Winter storms and has a few cosmetic scratches. I will put it in the For Sale section shortly.
Noisy & made of cheese, expect a drop of around 4-5 MPG, with a limited capacity of 75kg. There are far better alternatives on the market, all with a better load capacity & all considerably quieter, with less impact on MPG.
Prospeed, Frontrunner, Hannibal, Patriot, Big Country & Cargo Bear to give you alternative options.Paul.

Had an Expo on my D3 and now a Prospeed on my D4. Prospeed is a lot quieter and gives a slight gain in mpg, in my case anyway.
I did like the look of my D3 with the rack and all the other bolted on bits though.

Thanks for the replies chaps. Looking at the design, if you were to use a roof tent with one, do you need to add cross bars to it?

Thanks Allroad. What's the problem with a panoramic roof then - or is a D4 pan roof different to the one on my D3? The rack is shown fitted to a D3 with a pan roof in the catalogue. I'm presuming the original G4 vehicles fitted with this rack had pan roofs too as they were HSE's.

Having A G4, mine has a panoramic roof, I even use the Sun roof from time to time with no issues. Other than the noise !!
But if I was worried about that or MPG I wouldn't run a Land Rover !!!!2008 G4 D3 vehicle No 11. UK selections.

There's no problem as such with a panoramic sunroof - its just there's no point in having the sunroof if it is completely covered by the Expo rack!

Can't agree with the statement re MPG. I noticed no noticeable difference at all.
I also don't really notice that much increased wind noise either - and I have a spare wheel, maxxtrax and an awning on mine permanently - plus 4x spots.
If you want to drive around with an empty roof rack all the time then get a prospeed. If it's full all the time (like mine) then get the expo rack - It's manly and the "proper" rack for the vehicle as used by JLR themselves.
Edit to add:
I think the issue of load capacity is also a red herring. Yes, you might be able to get a roof rack with a load capacity of 250kg but anyone actually putting that much weight ON TOP of a high vehicle for a journey wants to re consider their load out organisation anyway - especially if any of it is off road expedition travel.
PS, I am 16 stone and happily walk around on the roof of my car when required...D3 07 SE - still going strong
D3 07 HSE - gone to car heaven
FL1 - gone to Romania
D3 05 HSE - gone to a divorce diet
D1 V8 manual - gone but not forgotten

I have a Maggiolina roof tent (smaller size), what's the best way to mount it onto the expo rack? anyone done this with any type of hard shell tent on an expo?
Nik. Did the same 80 mile (each way) journey daily over 10 weeks, 4 with my G4, 3 with the car naked & 3 with a Frontrunner, difference was very noticeablePaul.
