Getting around battery drain with taligate open

Hello all,

I'm planning on working out of the back of my Landy and was wondering if there is a way of getting around the battery drain when the tailgate is left open. My understanding is that the battery will drain if it is open but there is a way around (locking doors or something along those lines?)

Any information on this would be ace.

Cheers.

Use a screwdriver to close the latch and the BCM will think the hatch is closed. You may have to use tape to keep the hatch down if being left that way.

Plus 1 ^^^

wonder if it would also be useful holding the middle button in on the front overhead light for around 5 x seconds to turn the interior lights off, then repeat to turn back on

See many of us have replaced our interior bulbs to LEDs , plse ensure they don’t have metal surrounds on outside of the bulbs as they can earth out blowing the centre overheard light circuit board , plse don’t ask me how I know Whistle

Den, hope ur well my friend Thumbs Up

On the front light.

Hold the middle button for 10 seconds or until it flashes.
That will turn off all lights

Repeat to reactive when winter comes.

I routinely leave my tailgate open all day and haven't had any battery issues, so it may be less of a problem than you think!

Like Worms I've never found it to be an issue.
The car goes to sleep after a while and the lights go off.

However, when I had my D3, I thought I'd only be 10mins with the tailgate open once so put the radio on to listen to whilst working. I ended up being there a lot longer and the car didn't go to sleep which nearly caught me out. It was an HSE but I'm not sure if the spec of the ICE makes a difference.

On my D4 (HSELUX) even with the radio on it all shuts down by itself after a short while.
Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

The problem us when you're opening and closing doors and or tailgate. I've found if the tailgate left open it'll go to sleep but wake if one of the otger doors is opened, if however you leave one if the other doors open you can open and close any other door or tailgate without waking it.

I thought the issue was the constant opening and closing of doors and tailgate not leaving them open that caused to drain. With a door/tailgate left open the car comes alive and sleeps as per normal but if constantly opened and closed it comes alive with each opening and closing causing the battery drain.

I have not had an issue leaving my tailgate/doors open - radio a different matter.

Thank you all for your feedback. I've previously heard a lot of different things but you've all cleared it up for me.

I've disabled the interior lights and I'll just be mindful of constantly opening and closing doors. Thumbs Up

It's not just interior lights. ECU'S wake up when the car is unlocked. This is an effective drain.
The system shuts down again after a period of time, but will start over if doors are opened and closed.
If the tailgate is left open and left, and you don't touch anything else, this is absolutely fine all day long.

I disabled the interior lights. I regularly leave the tailgate and the doors open for most of the day for if the Dogs want to get in and out of the car, never had a problem...yet!!
