GG AT3 255/55R20 or 275/45R20?

Hello,
I am sorry but this is yet another tyre question... Need new 20" tyres for my D4 and have been looking at the GG AT3 as others have before me. For 20" rims it must be 255/55R20 or 275/45R20. I am not so keen on wider tyres but the 275:s are available with a 110V rating (255 is 110H) which seems to improve the handling in the wet.

Any thoughts and advice about this?

Thanks,
Peter

I have a set of both, I normally use the 275 45 21 for summer, the 255 55 19 for winter, the 255 give a far superior ride, do not throw mud up the side of the car, go over speed retarding ramps and pot holes far far easier, never ever experienced aquaplaning, do not tramline and alloys are easy to clean.
Whilst the 275 45 21 do look good, the ride is hard, they do aquaplane in standing water, they do throw mud and dirt up the side of the car, they can tramline at high speed(scary) they do not like speed retarding ramps or pot holes which must shorten the life of suspension bushes, these had been on the car from new.
My thoughts are to leave the 255 55 19 on and part company with the 275s as much as I like the looks of them. I don’t think the weighting of 110 to 111 is a concern for you.

Im interested in this also.

I don't suppose 275x55R20 will fit without rubbing?

I don't think they do a 50 profile as such.

Hi Peter,

As you know I have a set of 255/55-20 AT3's coming during next week if you want to take a look at them. I will try to have Micke Mek to fit them on the rims, so will be at least another week before they are on the D4.

I have the 275/45/20 and find the ride much harder than 255/55/19 on our other car

Tyre comfort is all about the side wall size, the larger the nicer, if you want AT, type tyres you should be looking at 18” or 17” rims as side wall deflection is the greatest asset to caperbilitys, bigger rims are just looks, although my 265 65 18” on black rims look pretty good, well I think so 😆

You can’t put 17 or 18” LR alloys on a D4 though

Hello and thanks for your inputs! I will go for the GG AT3 275/45-20 because of the improved wet handling. The height of the sidewall is almost identical to the 255/50-20 so shouldn´t be much of a difference. The alternative 255/55-20 would probably have been better comfortwise but I will go for the better handling in the wet this time.

Hopefully I won´t regret it...

Looks nice…

First impression is good. Stable, ok sound level and looks. Had some problems with vibrations above 120 km/h but started experimenting with tyre pressures. They are quite sensitive to small differences in pressure. I now have higher pressure than I would normally have but if lowered I get less stable ride and more vibrations at speed. I now have 2,9 bar (42 psi) in the rear and 2,8 (41 psi) in the fronts.

Quick question - are these the tyres you went for? https://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/gen...10v-803882

Got these fitted to my D4 in 275/45/20 about a month ago.

Initially I felt them a bit "notchy" eg not as smooth as the Scorpions I just took off.
So I assumed that was the price to pay for running this AT tyre
[never had it on the LTZ's I used to run].
However it turns out that the notchiness was just the square edged tread blocks just bedding in.
So after few hundred miles, the tyres sre now as smooth as the Scorions I took off.

I've certainly got no regrets and they do look good on the D4.

Hello,
Have been driving 20000 km with the 275/45-20 AT3 now and at speed (above 110-120 km/h) they are sensitive to the road surface. Smoth surface - no problems, little bit ruffer surface - transmitts slight vibrations to the steering wheel. I believe this is due to the width of the tyre and possibly because of worn dampers. I am still on the original dampers and the car is soon at 250.000 km so I assume they are not mint anymore. Also road surfaces in Sweden tend to be rougher than most roads in southern Europe so that might play a role as well. The winter tyres (255/55-19) do not have this phenomenon so for the smothest ride my experience after 230.000 km in D3 and now D4 with both 19" and 20" tyres is that the 19" suits the D3 and D4 best. The extra rubber makes the tyres a little bit more forgiving.
