Glow plugs - or something else? |
|
Morning all, just back from skiing in Austria and had a bit of a nightmare getting my D3 to start in the cold -
Did a 60 mile round trip on Thursday, so battery was charged (it was new last year, TDV8 battery and new alternator too)
Started fine for that journey when it was -5*c
Started fine the night before too, also -5*c
Come leaving on Saturday morning, it was -15*c and my D3 was not happy!
Let the glow sequence run all the way through, no start. Tried again, let it run twice, no start. It then took another 15 attempts to start before it finally burst in to life, smoking and running very rough. Had to keep my foot on the accelerator to keep the engine running too.
Tank full of OMV winter diesel.
Father-in-laws Mazda 6 estate started first time, no issues at all. Quite embarrassing really
So, is it glow plugs or something else?
Thanks 2014 D4 XS

If I'd known I was going to be so thirsty this morning I'd have drunk more beer last night.

I have the same symptoms - any ideas welcome. One LR garage diagnosed 4/6 glowplugs needed replacing @£250, another said it could find no faults.

Well I've been to my mechanic today for my 6 year service and he found that 4 out of 6 glow plugs are duff. Two measured 3.2ohms resistance, 2 measured 1MEG+, 1 measured 1020ohms and 1 kept flicking the display, so we assume that one is duff too. 2014 D4 XS

I have got 3 out of 6 faulty which is causing rough idle/excessive smoke when cold starting.
TLO has never sold any as of yet , that will change as of tomorrow
I am crapping myself on changing them tbh as have heard horror stories of them shearing off .

Yeh same here, I told my mechanic about the horrors of them shearing off and needing to have the head drilled/ tapped so he said he wouldn't take the job on, which is fair enough! 2014 D4 XS

Local indy had an 05 D3 brought in on a low loader recently with 5 sheared glow plugs and the 6th untouched but siezes. You'd think the monkey who sheared them would have stopped after the first or second one.
So, body off, head off and off to the local engineering firm for some tender loving care to get the stubs out. BIG bill for the original garage that made a mess of the removal.
So yes, LOTS of releasing agent recommended.
To the OP, mine was exactly the same this year - primarily due to the huge load on the battery when starting a D3 in the cold (and no doubt hitting the heated screen and seats). Do it too often in the cold with insufficient journeys (takes 8-10 miles to recover) and you'll nail the battery by the end of the week.
800 mile drive back in 11 hours and the battery seems to be back to its former glory. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
