Turbo Actuator

Hey all,

I have a feeling that my turbo actuator is either stuck and not moving freely or its gone. The symptoms are, if I accelerate too hard, the car takes off really well, but it gets to a point, the engine defaults into limp mode.

Once I clear the code and switch off the car, it seems to be fine again - until the next time. This seems worse in cold morning.

Oh, once the engine goes into limp mode, whenever I try to accelerate, I could hear a whistling sound - as if the actuator is bypassing the turbos.

Any thoughts as to how best to resolve the above? Big Cry

More likely a sticky turbo bypass valve that's located behind a plastic cover near the front offside wheel. Is the problem occurring at about 3000rpm? It's fairly easy to remove and free up.

Okay. I assume it's accessible from the top?

Once stuck, it's makes noise around there. Like air leaking/ whistling.

Do we have a specialist on here who could just take my car and do a complete check? I am looking to keep mine for a good deal longer and could do with someone who knows what they are doing just do a complete check, cleanup all the EGRs, de-coke the engine, check sensors etc.

Do we have such a person/ garage in the West Midlands?

Are you getting any fault codes? The bypass valve is more easily accessed from the wheel arch with the steering on full right lock. This is what you're looking for....

When it gets stuck open, I get low turbo pressure code...

I will find it and try to clean it, failing that, I will change it.

There's not much to go wrong with the valve as a whole, but sometimes the vacuum controlled actuator can fail - part number LR033284.

So, I managed to get to the valve and it was very stiff. Now, I am not sure whether or not you are supposed to be able to move it by hand, but I certainly couldn't. I had to use a pair of players to give me something to push against and it just about moved.

I spend 30 mins soaking it in with WD40 and eventually it started moving up and down. Seems to be freer however I still need a bit of muscle to get it going. Is that right??

Whist down there, I released the clips to the red hose at the bottom. I significant amount of gunk running out. Again, is it supposed to be there? if so, do I need to get it completely cleaned up?

There is some resistance to movement of the valve because of the vacuum actuator (or whatever its called), but it should be possible to move it a small amount by hand.
The gunk (thick black oil & water) from the intercooler is normal, as long as there's not too much (about a cup full came out of mine, after 110K miles)

Okay - Thats fine then. I seem to be consuming oil like its going out of fashion at the moment too.

I think I will remove it at the weekend and clean it up. Is it a matter of a few bolts, releasing the hose at the top and bottom and unplug the electrics?

Some guidance on this would be great. I am not afraid of a bit of spanner work, but want to ensure that its not a whole day job.

Thank you.

Maybe you have oil escaping from the turbo due to the actuator being stuck, with evidence of oil in the inter cooler.

Also do you have any fault codes. It might help narrow down the fault.

There are 3 bolts attaching the valve to the vehicle, plus 3 air hoses, 1 electrical connector and 1 vacuum pipe to disconnect. It's easier to leave the smaller air pipe (light grey on mine) connected to the valve and disconnect it at the top where it connects to a larger plastic air pipe. You should be able to remove it in an hour at most

Okay - I will give it ago. Hopefully it would not require any clever reprogramming.

Fault code is P1247-00 (6C) Turbocharger boost pressure low.

Any clues?
