Grabber AT2

My Scorpions (255/60/18's) are nearing the end of their life and I'm thinking of replacing them with AT2's.

I'd like to know from anybody who is running them what they are like on road. IE noise, handling etc I think it's a given that they will be better off road!!

Also, what price should I expect to pay?

Cheers
Simon

I think it would be a good idea to have a posting specific to best tyres combinations...lots of other forum members swear by the Goodyear MTR...
my suggestion is for the gurus to list the 5 or 10 best tyres for the D3 based on their experience.
 nothing yet.

Hoping to have mine on in time for the France offroading trip next weekend, so will be reporting back on how they performed. Ordered them for just under £100 each ex vat. They seem to be cheaper in mainland Europe though for some reason!

The MTR is for a different type of terrain vertex - mostly Mud, which we do see a lot of in these parts. Unfortunatly they are noisy on the road. The AT2 is an all terrain tyre which are the best kind of a compromise for those that don't do a huge amount of offroading, but still want to be able to tackle the tough stuff, but then go back onto the road and have almost the same performance from the tyres as 'road tyres'. Those I've spoken to with the AT2s seem to think that in some conditions on road they seem to be better than the standard tyres, and with almost no noise.

I ran AT2's on my old D2, they are brilliant. Quiet on road and superb off, wouldn't hesitate fitting them again.

Problem is that the MTR, if I am not mistaken are available ONLY in 19" whereas the AT2 are available ONLY in 18" or 17"... Thus, if you don't want to change the wheels, you have to choose according to what is available in the size you need... Wink

I've done about 2k on 18" AT2's now (pics in gallery) and so far:

Dry road: little difference from Wranglers or Scorpions. I'd say they handle similarly to OE tyres that are nearly knackered, ie a little bit noisier (say about 10%, but not always noticeable) and just a tiny bit less sure footed.

Wet road: well, it hasn't really rained, but on 'mildly moist' roundabouts theyre a bit squirmier, and I reckon if you were silly you could get DSC annoyed.

Stony tracks: Lovely. You don't need to drive like you're paranoid of puncturing all the time.

Mud, rocks etc... Haven't had the chance yet Big Cry
Roll on 12th May - Wild Wales LROAC

Fuel consumption: I can still average 30mpg, but there is a noticeable drain on power, so there must be a fuel penalty.

If I were only going to run one set of tyres, it'd be these for the 18" wheels.
But I'm not, so it'll be AT2's for off road, 19" wranglers on road.

Dave, what's your secret? (MPG). My MPG has dropped from 27-28 to around 25 since fitting the AT2s. Still think they are the biz and won't be changing them, but would always be happier to use a little less juice.

One thing I have noticed is that they must have a slightly greater circumference than the Scorpions, as I now catch the PTI stub on the underside of the barrier at my local Waitrose whereas before I passed under it with perhaps 1/2" to spare.
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Getting mine on this afternoon. Smile

ND, maybe thats more a result of the higher pressure you're running them at and the fact they're new and haven't worn any yet?

Doh! Hadn't thought of that...... Running them at 35f/38r at the moment and seeing almost identical fuel economy but the tyres are holding stones rather than releasing them as the tyre isn't flexing enough, so back to 33/36 it is.

Ah, the secret to phenomenal fuel economy Laughing

I'm lucky that my 28m each way daily commute is on relatively flat A road with steadily moving (50mph ish) traffic - ie perfect for economy.

Perhaps someone like TFC can shed some light here ... does the ECU 'adapt' and learn to use less fuel if you consistently drive gently??

going by the computer (currently 29.5mpg, reset 300m ago) I'd say I'm about 1mpg down since the AT2's were fitted - ie not enough to worry about.

The real problem here is that my journey is so boring Yawn that I have to fill my time with mental arithmetic of fuel consumption / range / fuel light roullette etc. ... ... I need a life!! (or at least to move office).

Fitted now, and just driven 70 miles home. Definatly noisier - though it seemed to be less aparrant by the time I was getting home, so either I'm getting used to it, or the tyres are bedding in.

MPG down. 28.8MPG on a journey that I would have expected to see around 30, possibly 31 on. Might improve slightly as they bed in.

Don't ask me what the pressures are - just told the tyre place what they should be but I'll be checking them tomorrow. Smile
