A friend was admitted to our local hospital via the Accident & Emergency Department at least 4 times this year; and was treated as an out patient in another department at least twice, maybe more, in the same period.
The hospital staff are all under great pressure, and I appreciate what was done for my friend; so this morning I drove to the hospital with 2 boxes each of Quality Street & Roses chocolates.
I delivered one of each to the A&E Department, where they were accepted by apparently unkempt youth. He was delightful, enquired about my friend's present condition, expressed thanks & wished me "Merry Christmas".
I then went to the other department with the remaining two boxes. There were two women on the reception desk, a younger one doing something on WhatsApp on her 'phone, the older one doing something on her computer - no one else waiting. I unloaded the 2 boxes from the fabric bag in which had been carrying them, and put them on the reception desk. No reaction.
I then said "Could you please see that these are distributed amongst the department"?
The response from the older woman, who never looked at me, was "Yes" - not another word; no thank-you, Merry Christmas or anything else! The younger woman looked at me & shrugged her shoulders!
I picked a quiet time of the day to visit, neither reception area was busy, in fact I was the only person in each.
What can one say!

A neighbour to whom I related this tale responded that I should have "exploded". I felt that this was not appropriate as I was there, to thank the team for what it had done. A very nice gesture, but maybe in the second dept you should have picked the gift up and walked back out with it. I know you didnt do it looking to receive thanks, but just common courtesy from the 3 women would have been nice.

Agreed. It was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done, taking chocs to the 3 wards my brother was on before he died, they were great at helping me as I was a wreck.

In the last six years I've been in Derriford intensive care and the cardiac unit. On both occasions my wife and I have called back with big boxes of chocolates and biscuits and on each trip we were thanked enthusiastically and the receptionists and nurses showed absolute delight with their gifts. Three years ago, at this time of year I was in intensive care and the cardiac unit at Southampton.
Before being discharged I organised a "whip-round" for the staff Christmas party. Not many people in hospital have much cash, as I discovered.
However after we were discharged a handful of us sorted thing out, and I was delighted to return with a couple of hundred pounds for the Christmas party.

A bit different from a friend of mine in 2011, who was loosing hair in clumps because of chemo. He asked the nurses to please shave his hair, which they reluctantly did with an old blunt electric trimmer. All they could muster on the cancer ward apparently.
They made that much of a hack with it, they laughed in front of him, took selfies and brought other nurses into see!
They kept telling him they weren't laughing at him, just the hair. His “gift” to their devoted care was not making a formal complaint! He recovered, but is still upset by what they did.
I suppose it’s like most things, there’s good and bad in everything.
