I've been looking at getting a D4 having had a D3 previously (although the RRS has quite a lot going for it), and it seems to me so far that there is only really one reason not to go for the D4 and that is price.

Clearly the D4 is more advanced, especially the engine, but the question in my mind is whether that and the slightly better running costs are worth at least £10k over a very nearly new D3? (HSE to HSE)

Also, the residuals Landrover are prepared to guarantee on the D4 are derisory (£17k ish after 3 years).

Perhaps the best option is to wait for 6-12 months and then buy a nearly new D4, especially as any production bugs may be sorted out by then.

Another thought: I have been told that there has been talk in the media of Landrover having plans to introduce new versions of the Disco and RRS in a couple of years that are 500kg lighter than the current models. Does anyone know if this is true?

Perhaps now is not the time to be buying a new LR? Perhaps it would be best to wait a couple of years? Any views?

just like everyone does about 2004 d3's..... Very Happy

It's not just LandRover who are guaranteeing low residual values on finance agreements, you should see what BMW think their cars are worth in 3 years time Surprised

From a personal perspective, the value of my Wife's 3 year Disco 3 has held up well. It has retained 55% of it's value after 3 years/36k miles based on discounted purchase price when new and trade in value today. Same age/Spec Q7's, FFRR and X5 have suffered much more.

According to a friend on mine in the trade the values of cars in the trade have suddenly collapsed in the last few days and that for the first time this year things are "behind book". Don't know if it's generally true but it may help put a context on your offer?

IMHO - the D4 is better value than a RRS - you get lots more car for your money - just a lower spec "image".

Our D3 Auto HSE cost £36,500 3 years ago (got a very good deal then) and after just over 50,000 hard wearing miles I got £22k for her on trade in. Thats depreciation of less than 40% which I thought was pretty good. But it was still a lot of money to change up to the D4 HSE.
