Me and the Mrs will be going to the south of France for a couple of weeks for the Christmas holidays. If possible, I would like to do some mild off-roading or greenlaning while we are there, but after searching through some threads on this forum it seems that the French rules on this are not very clear. Can anyone here explain what is allowed and what not?
We will be staying in the Ardeche/Gard area, near Barjac. Does anyone know about the greenlaning routes and/or off-roading possibilities in that area?

The rule is easy...
If the road/track that you are using is not barred with a legal road sign, and if you don't meet some guy in uniform who estimates that the track you are taking is impssable by a "normal" vehicle, then you should be fine...
Problem is :
- nobody knows for sure what a legal road signe exactly is...
- nobody knows for sure what a "normal" vehicle exactly is...
So, mostly, it is unseen, unpunished right now...
You might want to try to approach the CODEVER : http://www.codever.fr/ But I am afraid that it might be "French Spoken only"... They may provide you, for a reasonable fee, with a special insurance to cover any problem arising and the same fee give you a booklet with "do's and don'ts" (Alas probably in French only...)

Most of the forest roads that are closed in the summer season seemed to be freely accessible during the off-season: the gates were all wide open. I found that in the mountains just north of Frejus, South of France. I travelled along a very narrow track with a large drop on one side till I got to a pole barring access from the other side. Didn't fancy backing down the track so had to tackle a 45 degree bank of about 6 ft to get past the pole.
